Do $2 downloads make sense financially? No not really.

$2 at apple.com (and other sites) buys you a 40-45 minute long tv show.
Figure the average person has 4 free hours every night... 10 on
weekends... 40 each week... 160 per month.
Assume said person spends 1/2 the time watching new episodes on free tv
(nbc, fox, etcetera), so that leaves 80 hours to fill-up with
downloads.
80 / 0.75 * $2 = $213 per month.
ouch.

I don't think anyone expects a single customer to do that much
downloading. The assumption is that you would use this to download
individual episodes that you missed, not replace free TV viewing with
iTunes.

Sure, but in Troy's defense, his TV doesn't get any channels. ;-)

If there's a show you can't watch on regular TV (perhaps due to a
conflict), you can purchase a less expensive "season pass". This will
allow you to download all the episodes for a flat fee.

I think I just heard my wallet scream in pain. That is why I prefer
ad-supported streaming downloads. Doesn't cost me anything.
.
How about DVDs? ~$50 buys you a full season, totaling 17 hours. After
you watch it, you can resell it on ebay for $40. (Alternatively, rent
it for $10.)
80/17 hours * $10 = $48 per month.
Better.
