Mountains In Kansas?

I thought Kansas was a Plains State, flat land? Seems like in every

Steven L....
The town of Jericho is apparently just over the Kansas-Colorado border,
maybe less than 100 miles east of the border. So you can see the
Colorado mountains from there.

Lobster Man...
No you can't. You have to cross that border and be significantly inside
Colorado before the mountains are visible.

I know. I was born in Colorado and raised in Nebraska. I've driven
across Kansas on I-70 numerous times.

On the CBS Jericho website there is a map of what Jericho is "really"
like. If you compare the state routes and Interstate roads to a map of
real-life Kansas, you'll see how far west the town "really" is.

Lobster Man...
Based on the map on the CBS website, Jericho is roughly where the
real-life town of Oakley, KS is. That's a good 50 miles to the east of
the KS/CO border. You don't begin seeing the Rocky Mountains until you
get to Limon, CO, a good 100 plus miles or so to the west of Oakley. And
then they are on the far distant horizon, not as close as they are shown
in "Jericho".

outdoor scene in "Jericho"
there is a mountainous terrain?

Ubiquitous...
Compared to the other problems this show that one is minor.

Oh well, still enjoy the show.

GarondoMarondo...
If they really cared about the show's look they would take the time to
paint those mountains out, other shows take time to put stuff into the
background at least respect your viewers if you can't afford to travel

BTR1701...
Not every show. "Smallville" is supposedly in Kansas, yet there are
purple mountains majesties in nearly every scene.

Anim8rFSK...
Those are just piles of Kryptonite left over from the meteor showers.

BTR1701...
Would those be emerald mountains majesties?

GarondoMarondo...
ell, at least the winter scenes on Smallville are much closer to the

Ken from Chicago...
Isn't Kansas the mile high state?

real Kansas than we're likely to see on any future ep of Jericho.

all the way out to Knsas for location shoots.

elzee36...
A little CGI goes a long way.

David...
It probably would be much cheaper to film in Kansas but they would only
be able to get the most desperate actors to move there.

suzee...
They don't have to move there, just stay for a few weeks at a time.

David...
Probably a few months at a time. Which to someone from Hollywood would
feel like years.

BTR1701...
Didn't the shoot "Dawson's Creek" in North Carolina? I seem to remember
something to that effect. If they can get a whole cast of Hollywood teen
stars to live in North Carolina for a big chunk of the year, I can't
imagine Kansas would be such a stretch.

Rob Jensen...
Wimington, North Carolina has professional studio facilities and the
state itself has substantial tax breaks for filming -- both of which
Kansas lacks. If Kansas ever builds professional studios, gives tax
breaks and keeps the Jeezoids at bay, they'll get the filming
opportunities, too.

suzee...
You've never been to Kansas, have you....?

BTR1701...
Lived there for three years when I was a kid. My brother was born there.

bklyntv...
Well, there's not much of a comparison. a. sorry NC is not Kansas b. no
one on Dawson's Creek had ANY career before Dawson's it was their first
big break, so likely they'd go where asked (they couldn't go out in LA
anyway) . Pamela Reed, Skeet, Major Dad, Ashley Scott, while--granted a
long way from A-list--at least have SOME clout.

..
Garondo Marondo!

...
I kept wondering about that when they were talking of blowing up
the bridge. In what part of Kansas would you NOT be able to
drive around a blown up bridge by driving half a mile out of your
way????

And why were they going to leave perfectly good cars and truck on
the stranded side of the bridge????

Russell Watson...
There used to be a "prime-time soap opera" called "Flamingo Road" that
was set here in the part of N. FL where I have lived my entire life.
The fictitious town of "Truro, FL" where it was set would have been
30-40 miles west of here as it was described in the show. It was not
uncommon for mountains to be clearly visible in the background of
exterior shots, while in reality the highest point hereabouts is only
a couple hundred feet above sea level.

Brian Thorn...
Same with the mountains surrounding Odessa, Texas in "Heroes"...

Tony Calguire...
If you think Jericho is bad, you should've seen the Thanksgiving episode of
ER!

elzee36...
LOL, I gave up on ER 2 years ago but by the coming attractions I get
what you mean.

bklyntv...
I know, that was a HUGE gulf on ER. I've been to Chicago many times and
I can't recall any terrain like that. Seemed odd, as the midwest is
rolling, so they could have put it on a big hill and it would have
looked normal.

Tony Calguire...
Yeah, I was in Chicago last summer. As you look out over the region from
the top of the Sears tower, you really get a sense of just how WRONG the ER
producers could be. Is there any geography anywhere in Illinois that could
even be described as a "ravine"? Is there anyplace that has a fairly steep
change in elevation? I was trying to think; maybe the Mississippi river
valley on the western border might possibly have some bluffs, but nothing
like that anywhere near Chicago.

Victor Velazquez...
I didn't see the episode but we do have something called "The Ravines." Any
chance these were the filming location?

Gotta love them glaciers! :-)

bklyntv...
Not sure. Do they have 300 foot cliffs (didn't see any photos of that
at the link you offer). Seriously this cliff shown was like over 300
feet, it was a drop-off like you'd see at the grand canyon.

Lobster Man...
That's because it's filmed in Californa....

You're right, Kansas is pretty much flat as a board. Granted, there are
mountains to the west of it, but you really can't see them even from the
western-most border of Kansas. You have to drive a significant way into
Colorado before you even begin to see the Rocky Mountains.

Victor Velazquez...
Oh dear me, heavens no. Maybe 90 feet in the ravines proper, more if you're
talking about cliffs next to beaches but nothing like 300 feet.

Mark Nobles...
Not even really big potholes on the freeway?

There's absolutely no way the scenery from "Jericho" is anything like
what is depicted on the show.
