They don't. They said it would wipe out the west coast if it hit the
Earth as an example of the asteroid's destructive power (100 nukes
worth according to the article). The "west coast is doomed" line was
just something the original poster put in the subject line.

Like everything else on television, Nova was captured by its medium. It
ceased being a serious program about science and morphed into an
entertainment revolving around personalities. Flashes of the old quality
still pop up from time to time, but it's now mostly dumbed-down junk
aimed at those raised on glitz and eye candy.

I found it most notable in the eps on string theory that ALWAYS seem to be
playing when I passing by.
