Burger King's "King" is a creepy freak

Unlike the essentially endearing Ronald McDonald character,
or the long gone Col. Sanders, this creation of Burger King
does not want to make people eat there, it probably frightens them
away and (IMO) ruins appetites.
How did they come up with this freakish mascot?

Basically, they found a discarded BK mask from a Helium tank used at
promos and thought it'd be a great idea to use it so they didn't have
replace aging actors in their ads all the time.

At least I remember reading it somewhere once...
