As far as war movies go this one [CBS/City last (Sun) night.] is pretty
good. Knowing something of the historical event portrayed it didn't stray
too far from reality.

The desperate circumstances of Mel Gibson's battalion was a bit overstated
and the events leading up to it were compressed a bit. but it is true that
in the Ia Drang valley - the first major action between NVA and US Army the
AirCav did accidentally land almost right on the NVA HQ's main base.

I think there's a director's cut available, maybe there's more in that.

But what jumped out at me was the noticeably fake scene of a swarm of
helo's flying over the jungle. It was obvious the helos and background
jungle were artificially merged.

Perhaps bad is a bit too string but the scene showed that CGI is not
_quite_ up to reality in terms of realism.

Also, the film is from 2002 and effects tech moves at a very quick pace
so 4 years can lead to a lot of advances and what looked good back then
isn't so nice now. And there's also the whole problem of some effects
looking better on the big screen than on a tv no matter how nice one's
home setup.
