imagine a major pres. candidate who just split with his wife.

I always assumed they pretended to be married for the rest of the
campaign. It would have only been 4 months, very easy to conceal a
martial discord; Sherry campaigns on one side of the country while
David campaigns on the other. David might have gone through with it
because smart Mike (campaign manager) would have talked him into it.
And Sherry would have done it, as it's better to be divorced from a
President Elect than from a failed candidate (and besides, she didn't
WANT a divorce so delay is better than no delay).

When the crook was pretending to be Allen York (the father of the other
girl) why didn't he just kidnap the wife right away instead of spending
so much time pretending to look for the girls?

Good question. They wrote it as they went along, that might have been a
flaw.

Who was Nina really working for? Was she German or Serbian?

I got the feeling she was American who was working for the Serb. The
Germans were just her conspirators to her escape.

Why was Jack's mission in Kosovo set up to fail all along, or did they
ever explain?

I never caught that it was set up to fail. when was that revealed? (not
that I disagree with you, I just don't remember that being established)
