Annie...
And you don't think that there's a difference between actually banning a
show (your reference to Schindler's List) and simply complaining about it?

Barry Margolin...
It's only censorship if the government forces them to drop it, or
punishes them for airing it, rather than just trying to convince them
not to air it.

NYC Officials Want New 'Survivor' Pulled

NEW YORK (AP) - As CBS prepares to launch a new season of the hit
reality show "Survivor," this time featuring teams divided by race,
enraged city officials are saying it promotes divisiveness and are
calling for the network to reconsider. "The idea of having a battle of
the races is preposterous," City Councilman John Liu said Thursday. "How
could anybody be so desperate for ratings?"

For the first portion of the 13th season of "Survivor," which premieres
Sept. 14, the contestants competing for the $1 million prize while

If you review the thread, you'll see my comment was about the New York
City Government's Representatives possibly/ maybe yanking the show off
the air. If that happened, it would be censorship.

BTR1701...
If that happened, it would be amazing since local politicians don't have
the authority to order something off the air. Only the FCC does and even
then it can't censor based on the content of the ideas involved.

Elmo P. Shagnasty...
That's correct.

What this is, is grandstanding by politicians. Nothing more.

I can grandstand and demand that the politician be recalled for even
suggesting censorship. Don't know how far I'd get, though.

They can apply pressure: To quote from a new CBS article:

"The City Council members who are with the Black, Latino and Asian
Caucus said if they cannot get producers of Survivor and CBS to
voluntarily cancel this season, they'll step up their campaign by
trying to pressure sponsors and push boycotts."

For all practical purposes, that is government censorship.

As for the privately-owned stations, while they are free to do whatever
they want, I do think it's hypocritical to CLAIM you support free
speech & openmindedness (whether it's the conservate Atlanta station,
or the liberal NYC station), and then turn around and yank programs you
don't like.

If you SAY you support free speech & openmindedness, then ACT like it.
Don't go around yanking programs off your transmitter.

No, that is government representatives *employing* free speech.

In a statement, CBS Entertainment, which is part of New York-based CBS
Corp. defended the ethnic twist, saying it follows the show's tradition
of introducing new creative elements and casting structures that reflect
cultural and social issues.

"CBS fully recognizes the controversial nature of this format but has
full confidence in the producers and their ability to produce the
program in a responsible manner," the statement said. "'Survivor' is a
program that is no stranger to controversy and has always answered its
critics on the screen."

Well, if MB wanted to get some buzz for Survivor this season, he sure
got it.
