David...
from Marc Berman at mediaweek

Wednesday 1/03/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live
Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 14.04 million, CBS: 10.30, NBC: 8.98, ABC: 6.35, CW: 4.25

William George Ferguson...

William George Ferguson...
You know, one should at least try not to contradict oneself in the same
article. (I'm guessing the '4.9' is right, not the '4.25', unless Berman
is really egregiously mixing and matching Fast Nationals and Metered
Market/Overnight numbers).

altec3220...
He fixed it in a later post:

This performance bodes well for new episodes of OTH later this month.

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 4.9 rating/13 share, CBS: 3.2/ 8, NBC: 3.0/ 8, ABC: 2.5/ 7, CW:

Yet more proof that people only care about the helmet logos, not the quality
of the game.

David...
It was a close game for the first half so I'm guessing that the
8:00-10:00 numbers were much higher.

Obveeus...
According to zap2it, the ratings did fine as the game wore on. people watch
Notre Dame for the helmet logo, not their ability to put on a good game.

David...
I don't think Notre Dame fans would watch ther team get humiliated.

Obveeus...
Really? I thought they did that on a fairly regular basis in bowl games.
They have lost 9 straight, right? Notre Dame continuously gets invited to
better bowl games than it deserves because it can bring an audience to the
TV (even if not the talent to the field).

David...
Maybe they keep getting invited for their ability to keep the game
close for most of its primetime portion.

Obveeus...
Not according to the last decade worth of Bowl games.

Notre Dame gets invited to 'over their heads' bowl games because they can
draw a crowd and TV viewers, nothing more. They have clearly shown in the
last decade that they cannot compete at the level of games they are invited
to.

David...
All FOX cares about is that the game was close for most of primetime,
as yesterday's game was. I can't say if that's true for their other
appearances without dissecting the box scores.

Searching here,

In 2006 they lost by 2 touchdowns and the game aired on ABC but at
4:30 pm

In 2004 they lost by 17 points and the game aired on ESPN at 9:45 pm
in late December

In 2003 they lost by 18 points in an NBC game at 12:30 pm

In 2001 they lost by 32 points in an 8 pm ABC game

And the last time they were invited before then was 1997.

Obveeus...
They lost bowl games in: 95, 96, 97, 99, 01, 03, 04, 06, 07.
That is 9 straight bowl losses in 13 years.

I'm not sure why you are trying to claim they get invited for their ability
to keep games close during the primetime portion of the games. That is just

David...
Because it's what a broadcaster would care about (football broadcaster
at least. It wouldn't matter much in other sports)

silly. They get invited because they have lots of fans that will go to the
game or turn on the TV. They do not get invited for any ability ON the
field. It isn't about keeping games close. It is about people watching
college football based upon helmet logos rather than the quality of the
game.

David...
If ND = ratings why were they assigned to an afternoon game in 2006,
noon game in 2003 and a late-night game on cable in 2004?

Obveeus...
Contrary to what you might believe, 20million viewers at 4pm is the same as
20million viewers at 8pm to the advertisers. They don't really care if the
game falls in primetime, they just care if people are watching.

David...
If a 4 pm game got 20 million viewers than the same game would get 30
million viewers in primetime.

Obveeus...
It is a shame more people didn't sample these while so much other stuff is
in reruns. It is also a shame that the better show, of the two, got lower
numbers.

Obveeus...
For all the hype about how funny Jagger was supposed to be, the whole thing
made me yawn. Sure, he made fun of his lifestyle, but no more so than most
rockers do in most videos.

Obveeus...
Why is this junker still taking up airspace?

Obveeus...
Better ratings than every show on CW for the next couple of months.

Obveeus...
Not true. Many of those bowl games play on holidays where people are mostly
at home anyway.

David...
I don't see why there wouldn't be a bigger potential audience in
primetime even on New Year's day. And the noon NBC game and 10 pm ESPN

David...
Your argument is based on a belief that people go to bed at 9 on New
Year's day. I can't buy that so I guess I'll quit now.

Obveeus...
No, my argument was that Notre Dame gets offered bowl games above their
worthiness. Most people that follow college football know that teams get
invited to 'better' bowl games based upon their ability to put butts in the
stadium seats and bring viewers to the TV. Why you were arguing against
that simple fact is odd, but at least you have decided to stop.

game certainly didn't get 20 million viewers.
