Ausiello Report
by Michael Ausiello
Super Scoop: Veronica Mars' Ex Joins Smallville!
Yours truly just received a truly Super tip that's so good I'm not
waiting for tomorrow's Ask Ausiello to report it. Aaron Ashmore — aka
Veronica Mars' former beau, Troy Vandegraff — has been cast as Jimmy
Olsen on Smallville! Amazing, right? Well, the news gets better. My
Super mole confirms that Jimmy is being groomed as a love interest for
Chloe! I've got another eather-shattering Smallville scoop, but that
one I am saving for AA. (Hint: It's really good.)
Fun fact free-o-charge: True Fanboys will recall that Aaron's twin
bro, Shawn, appeared on Smallville as Clark's power-sucking nemesis
Eric Summers.

PEOPLE??!! CAN'T YOU SEE THEY'RE MESSING W/ THE FORMULA HERE??!! It's
like a Vanilla Coke all over again (note: I actually LOVED V.C.). Since
when did Clark Kent/Superman ever know Jimmy Olsen in Smallville? Or
Lois Lane? They're reshaping here and it's not good.
El Puerco...

Surprisingly enough, it doesn't. I've been doing all that for decades and
have yet to be dumped (yelled at, yes).

In the comics, Clark at least met pretty much everybody when he was
Superboy.

The series Smallville is BASED ON the comics, not a perfect rendition.
Besides, with falling ratings the show needs to try new things.....
we're watching the final desperate attempts to save the series from
cancelation.
Next year we'll probably see a visit from Batman or Spiderman or some
other "star" during the February sweeps.

I don't watch 'Smallville' and probably never will, but I watched 'Lois
& Clark' in the mid-'90s. So, Clark and Lois were like, late-20s, at
least. And that would have put "cub reporter" Jimmy Olsen at like 20,
21 max. So, if Clark Kent in 'Smallville' is like 18, 19 or 20,
wouldn't Jimmy have to be like, 14 or so on this WB sudser??????? And
if he's only 2 years younger, that warps the duration of 'Smallville'
and the time of Clark/Lois/Jimmy working at the newspaper.
jayembee...
|
SMALLVILLE is a different series. They aren't obligated to follow
LOIS & CLARK's continuity any more than either show is obligated
(beyond a point) to follow the continuity of the comics.
It's akin to complaining that LOIS & CLARK had Jonathan Kent still
alive after Clark became Superman when in the Chris Reeve movies,
he died before then.
SMALLVILLE has differed from previous Superman continuity in so
many ways already that adding a Jimmy Olsen who's possibly older
than Clark and Lois isn't even worth worrying about.
|
|
|
Well, Aquaman & the Flash have appeared, so Batman seems inevitable
(wouldn't young millionaire Lex likely run in the same circles as young
millionaire Bruce Wayne anyway).
jayembee...
|
There had been tentative plans for this a few seasons ago, but it
ain't gonna happen. Licensing deals have a way of getting in the
way. As long as Batman (and Bruce Wayne) is a viable movie
franchise, he won't pop up on SMALLVILLE.
David B...

Now, here's the other big news I teased about in AR: Sources say that a
pivotal comic-book character will show up this season — and it's got
"fanboy orgasm" written all over it. Can't say more, but expect an
announcement very soon (like, perhaps, in next week's issue of TV Guide
magazine).
The only character I think that meets that descrption is Bruce Wayne. I
hope this means that Warner Brothers has changed it's mind on this issue.
Anim8rFSK...
|
Nah. Fanboy orgasm says "Diana Prince" to me.
Bill Steele...
|
GL would qualify, I think. For me it would be Billy Batson, but that's
not exactly mainstream.
Anim8rFSK...
|
Yeah, GL was the only other one I could think of, but I don't think he's
well known enough to cause widespread joy, although he might still pull
off some fanboy orgasms.
They've done, what, Luthor, Brainiac, Mxyzptlk, The Flash, Aquaman,
Cyborg, Lois, Perry, Jimmy, Kara, and in some way Zod. Bats, Diana, and
a GL are about all the heavy hitters left. If they do a GL they'll
probably do Guy Gardner, bleah. :-)
Bill Steele...
|
Flash and Aquaman arrived as teenage precursors. Lois and Perry also
sort of in prequel status. How do you do a teenage GL? Before he gets
the ring he's nobody. How do you do a teenage Diana? She's stuck on
the island.
Which brings us back to a teenage Bruce Wayne, already committed,
wandering the world, training himself. He could even plant some ideas
in Clark for the future. "Become a symbol..."
If, of course, the writers actually think these things out.
Bill Steele...
|
Afterthought: Dick Grayson. He cold come through town with the circus.
Anim8rFSK...
|
Yeah, I thought of that, but would he be 8?
|
|
|
|
|
jayembee...
|
Especially given that they might be able to use that as an advance hype
for the Joss Whedon Wonder Woman film.
|
|
|
|
Spider-man's exteremely unlikely since the charactor's owned by Marvel
comics not DC/Warner Bros. They're unlikely to allow his use to save a
competitor's show.
et472...
|
It's not likely, but there is a precedent.
About forty years ago, there was "Captain Action" that was about GI Joe
size, and the premise was that you could buy costumes to make him into
other superheroes, such as Batman and Spiderman, and characters from
syndicated comic strips.
"Captain Action" himself was some sort of superhero, albeit made
up for the sake of the toy. I remember wanting one, but somehow I
never got one. On the other hand, I did buy and read one of
the comic books that featured him. Man, there's nothing like remembering
comic books that were so obscure that you'll never see them again, and
likely most people don't know about them. If only I could figure out
what superhero it was in that first comic book I bought.

If they're obliged to tell the same story all over again, in exactly

so far, all regulars of daily planet have made appearances on
smallville:
perry white in season 3 ep 5
lois lane
now jimmy olsen.
also, since in smallville tv universe, Themyscirian Queen exists, so
probably does
diana prince.

They're out of high school; they've been out of high school for a year;
will be in their second year out in the world when we see Olsen, who's
already been mentioned by Chloe, who put out for him.
Face it, they should have changed the name of the show to METROPOLIS
last year.
The only odd part is that they have a Jimmy Olsen who's probably older
than the rest of them and has been at the Daily Planet as long or longer
than the rest of them, which makes it odd he'd be a cub reporter when
Lois and Clark are seasoned reporters, but the show won't be around long
enough for that to become a problem anyway.

I would expect the Kent's to plant some rice if Lana moves in. Can't
picture her eating an ear of corn for some reason. She is anything but
horse-faced although I have seen someone on this board call Chloe that and I
wouldn't agree with it either.
Anim8rFSK...
|
Yeah, the actress is pretty, but the character is SO annoying (talking
Lana here) I couldn't resist the cheap shot.
|
|
|
From my point of view, Clark should date Chloe, since she is the only girl
that knows his true self and she is quite comfortable with that
responsibility. That logic could only be thwarted by there being some
external force that draws Clark to Lana--and I think that is the case.
Something has been drawing Clark to Lana since the Pilot--maybe it is her
genetics or maybe just some adolescent fixation. Whatever it is, it is
unnatural and Chloe should be the target of his affection.
E Brown...
|
What I love is the irony of it. Chloe is doing the exact same thing
as Clark - fixating on one person, regardless of their chances for an
actual relationship. Heck, she's *more* pathetic than Clark - Clark
Anim8rFSK...
|
Doesn't stop her from sleeping around though; it's not like she's saving
herself for him, or sitting at home at night hoping he'll call.
videonovels...
|
At least Chloe "moved on" and stopped liking Clark 2-3 years ago.
She's matured & thinks of Clark as 'just as friend' & that's realistic.
PPPG...
|
Her kiss with Clark at the season end would imply otherwise, IMHO
trike...
|
She's hoping to be upgraded to "friend with benefits."
PPPG...
|
That is where he gets the name "You
really ARE a Superman!
|
What I can never figure out about guys like Superman and The Flash is
how they stand to talk to ordinary people. They can perceive things so
much faster -- near light speed, apparently -- that interacting with
the rest of humanity must be like watching grass grow.
PPPG...
|
Or as I call it: 'Watching Golf'. :-) (no disrespect meant to golf-fans)
|
|
|
Anim8rFSK...
|
Except that's not in any way shape or form the case. She threw herself
on him in the season finale.
videonovels...
|
I don't remember that? Please remind me: What were the circumstances
that made Chloe suddely jump on Clark?
PPPG...
|
At the end of the season, in order to stop Zex [Zod/Lex] he had to do
something Chloe thought was going to cost him his life. She said the
cliche, "I may never see you again" and planted one on Clark's face, tongue
ad all was my thought ... waiting for the re-reun.
videonovels...
|
Maybe it was a "friendly" kiss. (laughs). If I was Clark I woulda
already asked Chloe to marry me (after the suitable 1-2 years of
dating). Forget that Lana bimbo.
|
|
|
|
Clark's still stuck in that "teeny bopper" stage (also stuck in soap
opera nonreality) where he can not move on to other pretty girls.
David Johnston...
|
Clark has no reason to move on. Any other relationship he has would
be just as doomed.
videonovels...
|
Ouch. I don't know; he seemed to do okay with the Aliesha(?) chick.
They had a rough start, but after Clark got off the Red, he seemed okay
& they enjoyed one another. I think Clark would do just fine if he met
the RIGHT women (not-Lana).
|
|
|
Heck, she's *more* pathetic than Clark - Clark
|
and Lana have reciprocal feelings for each other. Chloe's stuck on a
bf...
|
I do agree with you on that. Early in the show, at least Chloe had some
life outside of Clark. Now all she does is wait in the daily planet for
Clark to come in and talk to her. Oh yeah, she follows him around like
a puppy when he needs someone to hack into Luthercorp.
Bill Steele...
|
All that really means is that the writers aren't thinking of anything
for Chloe the character to do. She's just become a handy device for
exposition and occasional info-hunting.
|
There's been a few times Chloe stood up to Clark (like when he asked
her to spy on Lana), but for the most part, Chloe mindlessly does
whatever Clark wants, in hopes of getting affection from him someday.
|
guy that has no interest in her beyond platonic friendship - I think
it's safe to say he actually finds Chloe unattractive, given his
reaction the times she's come on to him.
trike...
|
Which proves he's an alien. Chloe is smokin' hot while neither Lana
nor Lois are even in her ballpark.
E Brown...
|
That is true. Mack is the hottest cast member they have, imo. I
guess this is the Ginger/Mary Ann situation all over again. Come to
think of it, I like Mary Ann more as well. :)
