Studio 60

I saw the promo for the new show Studio 60. It's a behind-the-scenes take
on an SNL -like show by Sorkin featuring Mathew Perry and Bradley Whitford.

It didn't really give a great deal of information, just a couple of
dialogue snippets between Perry and Whitford, but it looks interesting.

It looks like it has potential.

Yeah, though I get the impression it will be more of a dramedy. Not exactly
a stunning insight given the setting and cast, but enough to differentiate
it from a Sorkin does "the West Wing on a TV show"

Indeed, I'm expecting something closer in style to "Sports Night." Of
course, "Sports Night" and "The West Wing" were quite similar in many
respects (for obvious reasons).

searching the web around it appears NBC had planned to slot it in Thursday night put
changed their mind when ABC announced Grey's Anatomy moving to Thurs. Given
they are both appear to be dramedies I hope Studio 60 doesn't suffer the
same absurdity disease as GA did in less than two seasons - ratings
notwithstanding.

behind-the-scenes series about broadcasting (CBS' 'WIOU' or UPN's 'Live
Shot'). It's too "inside" to be relevant to the broad-based audience.
It's too "we're soooo cool because it's an insider joke and you don't
get it, so we'll put it in just to give self-absorbed selves a real
kick". If they could separate themselves and have an idea of what your
target audience wants, then perhaps it would have a fair chance. But
not like this.

Sorkin's talent is good dialogue. I don't think a behind the scenes of
broadcasting _must_ fail any more than a behind the scenes of the Whitehouse
staff must fail. If you deliver a good product then you have a chance. Time
will tell.
