curmudgeon...
That talented actor Tony Shalhoub plays his TV character Adrian Monk way
over the top.
That talented actress Patricia Rutledge plays her TV character Hyacinth
Bucket way over the top.

David Levy...
Agreed.

David Levy...
Agreed.

The only real difference being, that in the American TV show every one
suffers Adrian Monks antics in silence and do their very best not to allow
their true feelings to be known.

David Levy...
Numerous characters have conveyed their frustration with Monk's
behavior to his face. Some have actually snapped at him. Even Dr.
Kroger (his psychiatrist) did.

Yet in the British TV show Keeping up Appearance's, every one is either
annoyed or frightened of Hyacinth Bucket and never make any attempted to

David Levy...
The other characters often bemoan Hyacinth's antics behind her back
(and attempt to avoid her), but they typically are too polite (or too
overwhelmed and intimidated) to tell her off. With few exceptions,
their direct responses go no further than mild sarcasm (to which
Hyacinth sometimes is oblivious). Rather than offending Hyacinth,
they go out of their way to concoct elaborate excuses for why they
can't attend her candlelight suppers, et cetera.

hide it.
Both of those characters seem totally unaware of their eccentric behavior,
even though everyone else is only to painfully aware of it.

I may be wrong (I've watched a total of 30 sec.of this show), but I
thought the Monk character has self-awareness.

David Levy...
"I'm eccentric." --Monk (last night's episode)

Monk is entirely aware of the fact that his behavior is abnormal, but
he feels powerless to alter it.

Both are classified as comedies, so this is not an unfair comparison.
Why I wonder will not Hollywood ever allow anyone to get angry with Mr.Monk

David Levy...
What show have you been watching?

?
The British have no problem with their people showing their frustration with

Brandy Alexandre...
Monk is keenly aware of his behavior, as he goes out of his way to
remind people of what he's afraid of. Mrs. "Bookay" is not aware and
oblivious to other people's reactions to her. There is no way to
compare the two.

Mrs.Bucket.

What a weird combination of shows to lump together. I'm afraid your
comparative analysis doesn't hold water because they're simply too
different. In any case, some of what you say isn't exactly true.

The main problem is that the characters are so entirely different.
Adrian has a disorder that he is completely aware of, and he knows he
annoys other people with it; Hyacinth, on the other hand, is oblivious
to the feelings of those around her, and believes her own behaviour to
be perfectly normal.

And no one ever gets angry at her; I don't quite know where you get this
from. Her husband Richard, her two neighbours, even the vicar, are all
tolerantly nice to her, whether out of fear or a sense of politeness.

Monk, on the other hand, is often openly picked on. Indeed, in more than
one episode he has met with physical altercations and verbal assault.
He's bullied all the time.
