David...
'BATTLESTAR' SEASON 3 PREMIERE LEADS SCI FI TO TRIPLE-DIGIT RATINGS
GAINS

Pete B...
But a heavy tumble from the season 2 premiere, where Battlestar
attracted 3.1 million viewers in July 2005, as opposed to this this
years premier which had 2.2 million viewers.

Hobart Floyt...
A drop of 29%.

I KNEW those guys at Worldcon looked worried.

jblum...
...Good heavens, you mean that Galactica doesn't do as well when it's
up against a full slate of network competition, as when it's airing
against summer reruns? Clearly it's doomed, doomed I tell you...

Brian Henderson...
So what you're really saying is that given a choice between two new
shows, people do not choose Battlestar Galactica, they'll only resort
to it when they have nothing else they haven't already seen to watch.

jblum...
Nah, I'm just pointing out the blindingly obvious fact that if you put
*anything* against significantly tougher competition than usual, it
doesn't rate as highly. Hell, "Cosby Show" was the number one show in
the country, but its ratings dipped when they put "The Simpsons"
against it.

I'm just really amused by the way that the people who are so dismissive
of "spin", from their enlightened positions of fanboy superiority, can
come out with comments like the above. And they're not spinning at
*all*...

Snerk,
Jon Blum

Hobart Floyt...
I really don't want to watch a mediocre faux WWII
drama whose writers don't like SF, don't like the original,
and don't have a sense of humour.

This is the part that cracked me up:

"In other returning cable ratings news, last Wednesday's
"South Park," the Comedy Central animated hit's midseason
launch, pulled in 3.4 million viewers, most of them concentrated
in the 18-49 demo. That was the show's best midseason launch
since 2000."

That's like 54% more viewers than faux-Galactica got.

"Burn, Galactica, burn...you're finished, Adama..."

Cheers,
Jon Blum

#1 Cable Series for the Night

'SCI FI Friday' Reasserts Dominance

New York, NY - October 9, 2006 - Building on the summer ratings heat
that brought SCI FI more than 15 million new viewers via its original
series 'Eureka,' 'Who Wants to Be A Superhero?' and 'ECW,' the Channel
kicked off the fall with the hotly-anticipated season 3 premiere of
'Battlestar Galactica' (October 6, 9-11pm ET/PT). In the face of stiff
competition, the two-hour opener was the #1 cable series of the night.
And in combination with its lead-ins, 'Heroes' (rebroadcast @ 7pm) and
'Doctor Who' (new episode at 8pm), SCI FI reasserted its dominance on
Friday nights, with triple-digit demo increases vs. 4Q05.

videonovels...
Spin, spin, spin. 4Q 2005 was *reruns*. Of course new episodes of BSG
are going to show an increase vs. reruns last year.

The 'Galactica' season 3 premiere delivered a 1.8 HH rating with 2.2
million total viewers (P2+) - out-delivering its season 2.5 average in
total viewers (+2%), P25-54 (+7%) and P18-49 (1.4 million, +4%).

altec3220...
Even the person writing this release had to laugh at this pathetic
excuse for an "increase" over an entire half-season's average. Single
digit growth. Woo.

SCI FI's 7pm-11pm SCI FI Friday lineup averaged a 1.4 HH rating, 1.7
million total viewers (P2+), 1.2 million P25-54s and 1.0 million
P18-49s. Compared to the same time period last year (4Q05), this
reflects increases of:

+93% in P2+

+75% in HH Ratings

+120% in P25-54

+134% in P18-49
