BCI Licenses DVD Rights From FreemantleMedia's Portfolio
By Jim Benson
BCI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corp., has licensed the
long-term North American DVD publishing and distribution rights to
programming from FremantleMedia’s portfolio of television series and
films, including The Price Is Right and Family Feud, the British
sitcom The IT Crowd and the Impossible Pictures’ series, Prehistoric
Park. BCI recently distributed FremantleMedia’s DVD release, The Best
of Match Game.
David Ellender, CEO of the commercial arm of the producer,
FremantleMedia Enterprises, said the company looked “forward to
developing a FremantleMedia Home Entertainment brand in North
America.”
The agreement offers BCI DVD publishing rights to various genres.

Interesting. I was just thinking the other day that shows like soap
operas and game shows that rarely or never have reruns and zillions of
shows in the can might actually be put out on disc with the new HDDVD
and BluRay formats. Putting a soap out on DVD would be cumbersome
given the 200+ episodes they do a year, but a chart I saw gives HDDVD
and BluRay a capacity of 13.8 and 23 hours each at standard DVD
resolution. Given these shows are shot on video at nowhere near HD
resolution, the posibility seems there. Probably just a musing on my
part.

It could probably be done but such a box set would involve multiple
DVDs and appeal
only to the most hard core of soap fans who are out there but are there
enough of
them to plunk down the money to make it economically worth while to do
this?
