In the latest CGI-enhanced version of "Devil in the Dark", the matte
painting the producers used to represent the interior of the mine
looked three-dimensional. Was that a computer-generated graphic
enhanced to replace the original painting?

Brian Thorn...
Looked like they added overhead lights in the cave outside
Vanderbergh's office.

Bob Flaminio...
More than that. It's an entirely new rendering. Comparison here:

Ubiquitous...
Nice... I've been looking for some side-by-side comparisons.

JEDIDIAH...
It was just a better matte.

videonovels...
So the answer is 'yes'.

Doesn't really matter what technique was used to create it.

Good matte paintings are something you aren't even aware of.

Ken from Chicago...
Which is why they should have been replaced with 3d cgi--MOVING cgi.

Ken from Chicago...
You were moving. You count. You are somebody. Having only a FEW people or
items moving would underscore the stillness MORE than complete static shot.
That's why scenes of ghost towns from the Old West typically had a few
tumbleweeds rolling past, because a LITTLE movement highlights the
loneliness than no movement whatsoever. It's why old haunted houses are
typically shown with maybe a spider or rat crawling rather than complete
stillness.

I agree with VideoNovels that the mine should not be hubbub of activity but
the best way to highlight the loneliness of the place is by LITTLE movement,
not none. The human eye is built to notice movement more than anything else
and the contrast is what would stand out.

Ken from Chicago...
You need movement. Movement. Movement!

videonovels...
They have two men walking in the foreground. How much more movement do
you want? And before you answer, remember the point is to stay TRUE to
the original artist's vision..... which was an empty, lonely station.
.

Ken from Chicago...
Mining equipment, vehicles. Movement masks fake backgrounds better than
static fake backgrounds.

Captain Infinity...
And Imperial walkers and giant dewback lizards. Don't forget the giant
dewback lizards.

Captain Infinity

Ken from Chicago...
That or maybe people, people walking, people riding in vehicles, vehicles
moving on the ground or the air or the water or a combination.

Oh and maybe regular size lizards.

Because we are aware of a LACK of movement--even if it's only unconsciously.

This is one of those episodes where there's very few space shots... not
much enhancement to be done.

Brian Thorn...
Very different "fly out" of the Enterprise at the end, though.
