While many shows are simply content to show "placed" products onscreen, THE
SOPRANOS will not only show them onscreen, but on center screen, close up

When The Sopranos does it, it's meant as either a dig to product
placement, or just to make the show realistic. All of the examples
you gave occur in RL everyday. Do you speak only with generic

Exactly... doesn't mean they don't get paid, it just makes a good

product names?
The Office Depot bit was a classic dig. They couldn't have been
more blatent about it. If it were real PP, it would have never been
done like that.
|
(e.g., a few seasons back had Carmela reading
an article from the New York Times and the
camera had an extreme close-up of the NYT's
masthead filling the screen for the several minutes
it took Carm to read the article)
and have characters mention the products by brand name
(after having characters in the mob pull up in front
of an Office Depot, and hold a conversation for
several minutes, with the camera positioned so
the store's logo was onscreen, center screen, one
of the wiseguys get out of the car and ask, not if
any of them wanted anything, or if they wanted
anything from the store, but if they wanted
anything from the "Office Depot";
Tony has twice bought cars for his son and this
season, for his wife, and in so doing, did a
mini-ad for each car, mentioning the model, and
listed the features, like he was one of the
spokesmodels on THE PRICE IS RIGHT).
Sure LOST does tight close-ups of some book Sawyer's reading and last week
had some character ask for the "Neosporin" (tho I couldn't tell you what the
generic name for, what does Neosporin do?), and ALIAS had an infamous
episode where Sydney yell in the midst of chase looking for a car to
commandeer, "the Ford F-150", still THE SOPRANOS has to be the hands down
winner for most (blatant) product placements.
