More scripts for 2 rookie dramas; 'Unit' bolstered

Two struggling freshman drama series, NBC's "Friday Night Lights" and
Fox's "Standoff," have received additional script orders. NBC has

Obveeus...
Why? Friday Night Lights, especially, has all the appeal of watching
highschool football on the public access channel.

record hunter...
Did you watch it?

Obveeus...
No. It has zero appeal. The lead character is played by an actor I do not
like and the subject matter is completely uninteresting.

altec3220...
Now, take this with a grain of salt because I am just guessing here,
but there might be some people who disagree with you. I know, I know,
shocking. But it just might be the case.

record hunter...
I asked because I have as much interest in both the subject matter and
the lead actor as you do. So, I wasn't planning to watch it. But I
found myself in front of the tv at the time it was on, and I also found
it a remarkably moving piece of drama.

And I mean it: no one can hate football more than I.

But it's only about football as much as Sports Night was about sports.
It's about being winners and losers and how one becomes the other in
the blink of an eye, which always interests me thematically. Sure,
there are some clicheish moments, and a bit of foreshadowing that's so
obvious you think 'no, they can't possibly be going to do THAT,' and
then when they go ahead and DO THAT, you find it so emotionally rich,
and so full of theme and metaphor, it's more literary than most things
on tv right now.

This show: not so bad.

Obveeus...
Naw...check the ratings.

Kyle B....
I did, and about 4 million disagree with you. You lose - try to be less

Obveeus...
Wow...4 million. Those ratings are impressive to you? Clearly, this show
has very little appeal. Maybe it was only written for wannabee jocks trying
to relive their 'glory days' of highschool.

ordered two more scripts of the high school football drama "Lights,"
from NBC Universal TV Studio. Fox has picked up three additional
scripts from "Standoff," 20th Century Fox TV's hostage-negotiator
drama, which recently added Tim Minear to its producing team (HR
9/26). "Standoff" joins another new drama on Fox, "Justice," which
received a three-script order. (Nellie Andreeva)
