I'm relatively new to Torrents. I downloaded some and wanted to save
them to disk. Can I save them to a DVD-R and be able to play them on my
DVD player?

David...

Laddy...
Unless you have a DVD player that plays AVIs, you have to make them DVD
compliant.

There are many programs that'll do this. One of the easiest to use that has
a fully functioning free trial is DVD Copy 4 Platinum. There are also free
progs about. Just web-search avi to dvd or divx to dvd.

cloud dreamer...
Cool. More options. Thx!

Beats burning them to 48 CD-Rs :)

Rhino...
And getting up to change the CD 48 times!!

Or use the torrent option to download all the converting recording
burning programs in the world Nero is the gold standard
If they're .avi files you'll need to convert them to mpg. You can
either use a CD burning program that converts files or use "TMPGenc"
to do that first and then burn it to a DVD. Though it's simpler to buy
a dvd player that's avi/divx compatible.

cloud dreamer...
Thanks! I use Sonic Record Now and I don't see a conversion option so
I'll give the program a try (the torrents are .avi).

I also think it'll be easier to convert them then attempting to attach
another component to my entertainment centre. :)

cloud dreamer...
Just one (or two) more question. I'm using WinAvi. Do I convert from
.avi to dvd or .avi to an mpeg option?

Once it has converted (to dvd say), there's a file with an audio and
video component. Do I just burn the main file to a dvd? (I know there's
a hitch somewhere....)

Curiouser and curiouser :)

David...
I'm not familiar with these programs but it sounds like the "avi to
dvd" option makes it needlessly complicated. If you go with mpeg
you'll just get one file to burn.

cloud dreamer...
I just converted one file to MPEG2. It gives me two files (650MB and
243MB). It is as simple now as just burning those two files to a DVD-R?
(And which type...plus, minus, one, two?)

David...
You've lost me. I'm not sure how you got two files out of one doing an
avi to mpg conversion. Hopefully someone who knows the programs you're
using will help you.

And how would the menu work when played on a dvd player?

Laddy...
I assume it was one AVI file you converted. It sounds like it broke it into
CD size pieces, 650MB = 1 CD. What you want is a single mpeg file as output.
Are you sure you didn't choose VCD or SVCD as output instead of DVD? I
addressed menus in another post.

cloud dreamer...
Yes, saw the other post. Excellent info. My burner is +R or +RW
according to the manual, so I have that much figured out. And you're
right about the 2 pieces. The advanced button limited the conversion to
650 MB. As one piece, would simply burning that MPEG to a dvd finish the
process? I'll take your advice on the DVD-RWs. Don't mind spending a
little to figure the process out. Just for this one DL, I'd save a total
of 96 regular CDs...not to mention the space for storage on the shelf
(and getting up to change the CDs as one poster mentioned).

I have access to a copy of Nero 7. Perhaps I'll give that a run too and
see if I can get it all done in one go.

Laddy...
AVI to DVD is the conversion for playing on a standalone DVD player.

If your program outputs a folder of files with a VIDEO_TS folder and an
AUDIO_TS folder, it is the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder that would be
burned to a DVD with a burning program. Depending on what program you are
using for burning, the folder may need to be converted to an ISO image file
prior to burning.

The easiest way is to use DVD Copy 4 Platinum. It does it all for you. It
has a free trial:

If you are going to do a lot of this, then you'll want to learn how. Might I
recommend going to one of the following sites. Help, guides, and software
are available:

The afterdawn site is interesting. Would the DVD Santa work as well as
the others? It has a step by step tutorial which helps for us newbies.

One other question: Which DVD-R should I buy? The guy at staples showed
me plus and minus and one and two. Is there a difference?
