Sci Fi channel announces a spin-off of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, set 50 years
prior, CAPRICA. It focuses on an Earth-like society, but where high
technology has made everyone have a life of ease, when a there's a major
breakthru in robotics:
The Cylons.
The show will focus on two families, the Luthors and the Kent-er, wait, the
Graystones and the Adamas.

Blech. I was hoping this was a very late April Fool's joke until I
clicked on the link. Here's one case where I think too much of a good
thing will be bad. This sounds horrible.

Actually, it sounds like a perfectly reasonable way to do a spin-off.

Agreed. I'm encouraged slightly by the very preliminary language used
in the press release (the series "would take place", "would" be
produced by, etc.), though. I know BSG is a huge hit, but I don't want
to see anything take away from the original. Why can't the
entertainment industry ever be happy leaving a good thing well enough

Why do you think it'll take anything away from the original? The
original won't be diminished, any more than STTOS, STTNG, and STDS9
were diminished by VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE.

That's just the thing. Voyager and Enterprise didn't really infect any
other series, but I definitely didn't like seeing Janeway in the last
movie (though in this case, it just made a bad movie worse).
A prequel series about the beginnings of the Cylons just seems overly
gimmicky to me, and the current series has only been on for 2 seasons
anyway. It's hardly established itself, and I would rather see them wait
before creating a franchise out of it...

Funny, I recall people saying the same thing about the new BSG.

Good point, but at least the new show was 25 years removed from the old
one. Fans of the original were free to ignore the new one if they
wanted. With the spinoff intertwined with the current series, that
could be somewhat difficult (even moreso if they get the idea to do
some sort of lame-brained crossover). Not to mention the possible

Ah...the shows are set 50 years apart. There's nothing "intertwined"
about them, other than that they're set in the same universe.

distraction to the creative team that could result in BSG's quality
level dipping... So the situations aren't exactly parallel...
I've been mostly impressed so far, though, so maybe I should give
Moore/Eick some more credit.

SG1 and Atlantis seem to be doing well together. I think it could work.
I hope they give this one at least one more season before they double
up, but I don't think it would detract from it.
