season 1 of DS 9 is currently on spike, and i noticed that rom was not
as "dumb" as the
rom of the final season. the final season just wrapped up on spike, so
i am able to make a comparison.
in season 1 he's articulate and speaks like a normal person. in the
last season, he's like homer simpson dumb.

Is this the same character Nog told Sisko "could be chief engineer on
any starship..."?
Rom saved the day more than once (i.e., "Our Man Bashir".)

Rom is not dumb. He is a genius at mechanics, but inept is social
gatherings. He knows exactly what he wants, how to get it, how to love,
and how to be loved. He is clearly of the smartest characters on DS9.

Don't forget that thanks to the machinations of his mother Rom ended up as
Grand Nagus. And what about his son Nog who went from snotty illiterate to
Starfleet Lieutenant in seven years?

what you wrote may be true, but what i was really getting at was how
come Rom talked like a normal educated literate person in season 1, but
in s7, began to talk like a caricature of a cartoon character.

We didn't see much of him in S1, and he didn't even get a name until
his second or third appearance (he was first credited as "Ferengi game
runner" or something). By S2's "Necessary Evil" he was talking the way
he would the remainder of the series.
