Around 1961 there was a TV show "Car 54..", a comedy about police and
life in the Bronx NY.
I'm interested in getting a DVD set of the show, although Amazon and
other major booksellers do not have it.

That's because it's not been officially released on DVD, and Amazon
and other major booksellers don't carry bootleg products.

I noticed on the web that two independent outfits, "TVDVDPlanet" and
"TheMediaDepot" both offer it. However, I've know some people who

Both of them are pirates, who are selling material that they don't
have the rights to.

bought some independent offerings and found they were very good quality
reproductions; perhaps amateur copies from VHS tapes. I'm not familiar
with these two companies.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Outfits like these have copies
(possibly even multigeneration) that they've compiled from taped
recordings off of TV, and are selling them for outrageous prices.
