But ultimately, what does this have to do with the show?
By that, I mean, these Internet easter egg hunts and wild
goose chases have little to do with the episodes, right?

Well, they can't make any of them too critical or they'll lose too many
people who don't enjoy tracking all this stuff down and speculating on
it. OTOH, there has to be some payoff for those who do. Very tricky,
but I hope they pull it off. I think expanding a TV show onto the
Internet in this way is a very interesting and creative experiment.
Also risky.

I don't think the web sites are necessary to completely (understand and)
enjoy the show. I do believe the web connection is a way for the Lost
creators to maintain show interest over this long break in the airing of
Lost on ABC. The web info is giving some of the "whys" of Lost. One
episode of Lost could fill in any gaps left by those not following the web
stuff.

Here is a VERY quick overview of what I see the web outlining.

Hanso Foundation is practicing questionable business ethics. Some of Hanso
business ventures look good on the surface, but underneith the glow is a
dark , sinister side, that harvests human body parts for profit (3rd world
parts for money), runs mental health facilities that do unethical
experiments on patients. They have ties to nuclear and other toxic waste.
They have ties to harmful tobacco use.

They TRUELY are EVIL, aren't they? :-D

I suspect the Hanso off isle business practices and influence will have a
direct tie to the losties environment and dangers they are facing. If
mutations on isle are ocurring, Hanso 'sinfluence seems to be responsible.

conjecture. The mental Health clues in the last 2 days has indicated that
Vik, is "testing" autistic savant patients. "Tommy" appears on the
computer as a brand name. But the "Tommy" autistic savant condition was an
easy connection to assume. Tommy was deaf, dumb and blind, but had one
special talent, like savants do. The memo from Vik, mentions testing of
autistic savants.

The few I have seen have proven to have nothing to do with the show,
or worse yet, are later dismissed as not being meant to actually have
any bearing on the show.
