Fine. Then in a few years when a cardiologist tells you there's damage
to your heart, you'll know why. Remember, it is a muscle.

telenovels...
So which is worse? Being 'normal weight' with restricted calorie diet?

Or - being overweight with fat-clogged heart/arteries?

cloud dreamer...
Actually, a recent study found that one is bad as the other if you're
not getting any exercise.

Obveeus...
One is as bad as the other physically. However, if you are talking about
mental health and enjoyment of life, eating food that you can enjoy the
taste of is far better.

Plaque is made up of cholesterol, lipids, and cellular debris. All are
present in your body.

You have fat in your system whether you realize it or not and by not
feeding yourself the fat that your body requires, it preserves the fat
in your system. You don't have to be 5'5 and 200 lbs to have fat in your
arteries. Without the exercise to blow out what plaque is building up,

.

Good point. Maybe I'll start riding a stationary bike while watching
Heroes, Jericho, and Galactica to "blow out" the plaque in my arteries.

you're at risk just like the 5'5, 200 lb guy. But if he exercises, he
has less chance of having clogged arteries, even with the extra weight.
And a new study released yesterday found that chocolate (in moderation)
can reduce the clotting of platelets.

Another study also found that men that stayed trim by eating right and
"exercising" lived longer.

But I imagine Troy doesn't want to be educated in this regard. He's just
looking for anything that will justify his sedentary lifestyle.

At 800 calories a day, it will be in time...

I just saw that Kirstie Alley video where she displays her "overweight"
body in a bikini. We treat smoking & excessive alcohol-drinking as
diseases, advise people to avoid such risky behaviors, and treat
smokers/alcoholics as being near-pariahs in society (we even segregate
them to smoking sections inside restaurants).

David Johnston...
No we don't. People drink everywhere in restaurants.

Sharpe Fan...
The separate smoking section is because of second hand smoke. Is there such
a thing as second hand carbs?

Jonathan Roberts...
Yes, but you REALLY don't want to patronize the sorts of restaurant
which serves them.

videonovels...
You didn't answer my question (below). And to answer you, YES there is
an impact on society since over-eating leads to fat-clogged
hearts/arteries that raise Medicare Taxes and subtract money from your
neighbors' wallets.

Should we be doing the same with Over-eating? A disease? A risky
behavior to be avoided?

record hunter...
I don't know about you, but when I go to a restaurant, I definitely
want to sit in the eating section.

~consul...
I hang at the bar farrrrr too long.

Certainly, if only there were messages being sent out that thin is
better!

Unactive thyroid is most certainly a reason to be overweight. The
problem isn't when it's being treated...the problem is getting it
diagnosed. The current range of TSH is so broad that people could be

telenovels...
.

Question: I don't know anything about thyroids or how they impact
weight, so please bare that in mind. Q: What would happen if an
underactive thyroid person stopped eating? Would they still gain
weight?

Barnabas Collins...
No but they also would not loose weight. The body goes into
starvation mode and won't release excess fat. The body hordes
whatever nutrients it gets.

For myself, I'm down to only 800 cals a day (and normal weight). Maybe
I've got a thyroid problem and don't know it? (Although I personally
think it's just an inactive lifestyle.)

Barnabas Collins...
Do you get excercize? Do you eat breakfast? Do you spread the meals
out through the day?

telenovels...
.

No. Yes. 3 meals a day. Sometimes only 2 (skipping supper).

cloud dreamer...
Firstly, 800 cals is not enough to maintain your health. A body requires
a minimum of 1200-1400 calories a day just to keep your organs
functioning (absolute minimum recommended is 1000 calories). That keeps
your heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, brain etc running properly. When you
continue with such a small caloric intake, your body will enter
starvation mode. That is, it will do everything to keep what fat there
is and start burning calories from muscle mass. When it takes the
muscle, your metabolism slows (since muscle requires more calories to
keep it functioning and you won't notice that if you're not active). Any
reputable weight loss program will tell their clients that not eating is
not the way to lose weight (you will lose it but not without risking
damage to the organs). So, unless you're a tiny person with a slight
frame, you should most certainly be eating at least 200 more calories a
day. Could the inactivity be related to lack of energy????

All this would apply to a person with hypo. They'll eventually lose the
weight (as would anyone), but it won't be healthy. And when they start
to eat again, the weight will just go back on (often even more).

Hypothyroid symptoms include fatigue, cold hands, cold feet, weight gain
(or difficulty losing weight), constipation, dry skin, weak nails,
concentration and memory problems, irritability and depression (which is
often diagnosed but the underlying thyroid problem is missed).

Barnabas Collins...
Bear in mind cold hands and cold feet can also be due to poor
circulation, sometimes related to Diabetes.

cloud dreamer...
The idea is that if these symptoms are familiar, a visit to the doctor
is in order. Each individual symptom can be found in a myriad of
conditions. The key is finding out what it is as a whole. A good doc
would screen for diabetes as well as check the B12 and iron. If cold
hands and feet were the sole complaint, then circulation (ie
a possible heart related problem) would be a concern.

suffering from hypothyroidism and not know it or can't convince a doctor
of it. I've known people who've had TSH in the so-called normal range
for years and couldn't get a doctor to treat them until the got so sick
their TSH finally hit the abnormal range. In the meantime, the weight
piled on and on and on and there was shag all they could do.

Menopause can also cause hypothyroidism but you can take all the
Synthroid you want...it ain't always gonna help one lose the weight
until the other hormones are brought in the balance.

mary...
If your TSH is even close to abnormal, you can find a doc who will
prescribe. If one won't, find one who will. There is no question about
my TSH, though. I need the pill.
I take Levoxyl, costs me $3.50 a month. It is not, however, a magic
weight loss pill. You must still eat reasonably and exercise.

As for menopause, I am currently in the tail end of that - I did gain 5
pounds over the couple of years while my hormones were out of whack, but
that weight is starting to disappear. I take longer walks with my dogs
these days... does wonders for my state of mind as well.

However, you have to admit, the reason most people are fat is because
they overeat and underexercise. No way around that one.

Barnabas Collins...
Of course it doesn't help when much of the food you consume is
loaded with calories, the portions are huge, and we get no
excercize.

Captain Infinity...
How come you don't spell your name "Barnabaz Collinz"?

I'm just curious.

The difference is that while one can stop smoking or drinking alcohol
safely, one can't stop eating safely.

The treatment for most compulsions to to avoid the object completely,
but you can't do that with food. Sure, you can avoid certain _types_ of
food, but eating too much healthy food isn't healthy.

Captain Infinity...
I think *you're* a disease to be avoided. Someday I hope we'll see a
cure.

telenovels...
Hey, I think I hear your mommy & daddy calling you to supper, teenage
boy. (You may not be an actual teen, but you sure act like one with
your frequent name-calling against other posters.)

Captain Infinity...
Just you, you addlepated, microcephalic chowderhead. Just you.

Oh, and Dan Tropea. One of these days I'll call you Dan Tropea.
That'll insult you both.
