I agree with that.

I just think it is unfortunate that the mentality going in was that he had
to be as contrite as possible and not even make any attempt to discuss what
happened. He admitted it was based upon his anger, but didn't even attempt
to address there being any reason for the anger. It is as if everyone knew
that it is more important to quash the uproar than to actually address the
situation.

I do think that the Letterman audience should have been clued in about the
situation beforehand, though.

According to a story on the CBS evening news. Richards will issue an
apology and say
"I am not a racist".
