(Since my original post was ruined with petty bickering and
back-stabbing, I decided to post a new 'clean' copy of the
announcement. Try to keep it civilized; ignore people trying to bait
you into a confrontation.)
.
The popular futuristic "novel for tv" Babylon 5 is making new episodes.
It will be called Babylon 5: Lost Tales, and it features random short
stories set on the space station. However unlike the previous show,
which was sold to local tv stations between 1993-98 (syndicated), this
new series will be sold *direct-to-dvd* and *direct-to-internet*.
As far as I know, it's the first time a tv drama has skipped
traditional tv channels, and used new technologies like DVD and
Internet to reach the audience. Assuming this experiment works, it may
give hope to Stargate SG1 fans that they will see a new season 11
direct-to-dvd or internet.

Because the syndicated/ local tv market that used to exist between
1993-98..... no longer exists. There's no place to put a Babylon 5,
Star Trek, Xena, or any other Original Drama on local tv stations. So
instead, WB is targeting dvd and internet.

Actually, Warners is open to offers from TV channels to show The Lost
Tales in addition to the DVD release, and has apparently already had
some interest in that regard.

Yes that's true. I haven't been able to find out who yet... I don't
think they are releasing that info yet.

videonovels...

REALLY? That would be good news, as then I wouldn't have to spend my
money. I could watch these new episodes for "free" off the antenna.

Amazing .... I am not sure exactly why B5 fans are "pimping" this show
in an SG1 group .... maybe there aren't enough postings on th B5
videonovels...

groups? I don't know and I didn't mean for that to sound condescending

Yeah, low traffic in most B5 groups.
|
... but with this many B5 fans why didn't the show last or why wasn't
there more of a collection (comics or paperbacks whatever) of current
"B5 crack" ? (B5 crack - means something new to satisfy the cravings of
the fans) and if there is new "B5 crack" then I apologize and assume
that Books a Million must be hiding it somewhere else. I didn't see any
last time I was there.

The B5 TV series was written to last 5 seasons. "Crusade" was to follow but
was cancelled after 13 or so episodes. "The Rangers", or whatever it was
called, was a mini-series (or something like that) and wasn't very good so
it didn't go anywhere. There are books but I have no idea how many or what
they cover.

BTW, this "tales" series is nothing new. JMS announced circa 1996,
that if WB insisted he stretch Babylon 5 into a sixth season, he would
end the serialized-story at episode 522 (as planned), and then rename
the sixth season to "Tales of Babylon 5". Ten years later, and that's
exactly what he's doing.
(Although, I'd personally prefer to see the 5-year-serial Crusade
continued. The story was just starting to get interesting, with Psi
Corp & Shadow Mages.... but then the plug got pulled.)
