CBS first used this particular theme music (which I call the
"Sha-Nana-Nana-Na" theme) for their Super Bowl XXVI telecast (the
Washington Redskins against the Buffalo Bills from the Metrodome in
Minnesota) at the end of the 1991 season. They would continue to use
this particular theme through the end of the 1993 season, when they
lost the NFC rights to Fox.

When CBS got the NFL back in 1998, they wisely brought that this theme.
Unfortunately, as the years progressed, CBS tweaked the melody on two
different occasions (in 1999 and 2000-2002) before junking it
completely in favor of the current " Posthumous Zone" theme. The more
they messed with it (and tried to polish it), the less amount of power
the theme had.

The original "Sha-Nana-Nana-Na" theme was catchy, up-tempo, jazzy but
also intense and awe inspiring. What made it so unique was that it
built up slowly before the upbeat climax. There was truly an epic aura
surrounding it that very few sports themes/melodies have been able to
accomplished. While the "Posthmus Zone" is also intense, it doesn't
have that joyful quality that the original "Sha-Nana-Nana-Na" theme.
The "Posthmus Zone" to me, sounds like an overwrought, overbearing
caricature of typical "NFL Films" music.

This particular website as a sample of the original "Sha-Nana-Nana-Na"
theme, but it's played in a continuous loop and is not a clean copy to
begin with:

My one regret (besides taping the live telecasts) is taking the clips
from YouTube (before of course, the NFL had them removed) and upload
them on keepvid.com.
