I tried looking for discussion of this on BBC's website, but Series 1
aired so long ago that any comments about it in their forums have long
since been deleted.
Anyway, spoilers for tonight's episode......
Why did Ash give Arthur Bond fake stacks of money? With Danny's quick
thinking, Bond was led to believe that there was only about £70,000 in
the till. So they could have given him that much and he'd have called
off his dogs, leaving Mickey et al with more than £400,000. Now Bond
is out for blood again. Ash's actions seem counterproductive to me.

Danny had convinced him that the money in the satchel was fake.
The money that Ash had in the cage was the fake bundles that they kept
on hand to convince the mark it was a real betting club.
If they had used money from the satchel to pay off Bond, he would have
known that all the money in there was real and taken it all.
And they are conmen, so they must con.

My guess is they didn't have any money to give. When their victim said he
wanted to place a second test bet they said something about using all of
their money for the first con.

Right, after the first couple of test runs to hook him, they couldn't
let him win again, because they didn't have enough money for a payout.
So they tricked him by starting the tape of the race before he was able
to place a bet. But I'm talking about the very end, the next day, when
they had just pocketed £500,000 from him. They had plenty of money to
pay off Arthur and still go home with lots for themselves.

Right, but the real money was all in one place, in the briefcase, in plain
site. They'd have had to convince Bond to only take part of it, which seems
unlikely to happen.

Ah, okay, I didn't catch that the £500,000 had all been moved from
the till to the briefcase, so all Ash had left were the fake bundles.

Actually they never took it out of the briefcase. Remember they didn't have
time to count it, so the head guy told him to leave it in the case and
they'd count it after the race. So it was still all contained.
Of course, if I'd have been Bond, I'd have taken ALL the money and sorted it
out later.
In fact I'd have taken it to the bank and the police and said "I think these
con men tried to pass counterfeit money on me, would you check it please,
and if any of it's bad, here are their names" :-)
|
Still, the bottom line is that Bond is angry at them, and that can't
be good.
ANIM8Rfsk...

Oh, absolutely. Which is why I take it they're leaving the country. :-)

Although they should have had at least 24,000 -- Joe 90 bet 12,000 that paid
off at 2:1 on the first bet.
The half million was all in the briefcase. They couldn't really give him
part of it without giving him all of it.
I suspect the fake money bundles were for display for paying off all the
'extras' bets. Probably didn't want to be handing all those bit players big
wads of cash, even if you had it available.
