Ever see a film or TV show where you thought, based on previews and
word-of-mouth, you had a pretty good idea of what you were going to
see -- and what you actually see is a total letdown?

I just purchased "The Station Agent". It was clear from previews and

Stan Brown...
That's nice, but why on earth are you telling us about it in
rec.arts.TV?

If you'd read the post To The End, you'd see I'm interested in
people's responses to both films and TV shows....

reviews and so on, that it would be about a bunch of slightly oddball
characters meeting out in the middle of nowhere, and forming a bond.
But it's an art film, I figured there'd be some dialog with some snap,
crackle, pop! Instead, at least in the first 35 minutes (the film is
only 90 minutes), the main character (Finn) is so totally withdrawn --
God, you'd think he was autistic -- I didn't want to spend two minutes
with him. The other two main characters? One is a hyper-flaky artist
who has probably skipped several doses of lithium, while the other is
a totally dense hot-dog vendor who couldn't read the "get lost" signal
if it was written on the Goodyear blimp.

My response was rapidly growing dislike. All the characters are
probably supposed to "make happy" with each other in the end? Who
cares, I wouldn't want to be around any of these people. And if there
is any snappy dialog, it must come later in the film. Much, much
later....

Anyway, anyone else ever find themselves wandering into a film, or
seeing a TV show, and thinking they have a pretty good general idea of
what to expect -- only to find themselves totally disappointed?
