Best Buy has season 4 and 5 on sale for $19.99. Is it okay to start
the show with season 4? Or is this the type of show that must be
watched in proper order?

Rob Jensen...
The beginning of season 4 is a good jumping on point, IMO, so go for
s4 and 5. Yes, it's a serial -- the episodes build on each other, so
you *do* have to watch them in order. But since Rory is starting her
college years at the beginning of season 4, it clearly marks the
beginning of a new phase in her life. The s4 premiere is almost like
a second pilot episode that way.

I have seen 1 or 2 episodes on tv, and it seems soap operish. I hope
this is not yet another teen soap like Smallville or Dawson's creek
(worth watching once, but lacking depth; not worth repeat viewings).

Brian Thorn...
Season 4 is okay, but the show's golden years are 1-3, while Rory is
still in High School.

Rob Jensen...
The presence of romantic relationships doesn't make Gilmore Girls a
teen soap. It's actually a deconstruction of parent-child
relationshiips. The series shows how dysfunction and functional
parent-child relationships can affect every other aspect of a person's
life, *including* her ability to form romantic relationships, but even
those romantic relationships are subservient to the main family-drama
plot. Think of it more as a New England Northern Exposure with 100
times the verbal wit.

Sandy McDermin...
Season 4 is a transition season, but very realistic in terms of a young
girl/freshman, who has never been far from mummy, trying to make her way in
her first year at college, while her mother tries to adjust to the empty
next syndrome. The 5th season is gangbusters. Both Gilmore Girls break free
from each other and explore their possible futures.
