Tomorrow starts the end of WB airing of cartoons. This marks an end of a
long wonderful streak of local stations airing cartoons.

First UHF channels were taken over by WB, UPN and Fox. These stations
had for years aired animation. Some original syndicated cartoons and
others classics like the Hanna Barbara cartoons and Bugs. Then UPN
dropped all its cartoons which were becoming good with its association
with Disney - Gargoyles.
Then Fox dropped all of their cartoons.

What did UPN and Fox replace the shows with talk shows and judge shows
with the occasional sitcom rerun.

Now tomorrow WB will air ER at 3pm. Why ER? Its run each day on TNT. Why
Roseanne? Doesn't a cable station air it daily? Why can't TBS air 8
Simple Rules instead of rerunning Raymond and Friends over and over and
over and over again.

It was announced last year that WB would be dropping it's weekday animation,
mostly because of the competition from Cartoon Network and such. It's not
such a great loss since they most of the shows were repeats of weekend
shows. WB will also add an extra hour to it's Saturday schedule starting
this weekend (and some shows may be shuffled about).

I wouldn't call it the end of an era, since it's always possible that WB or
someone else could decide to start running afternoon cartoons again. I
remember when repeats of primetime shows was the standard for afternoon
fare.

I guess CN and Cartoon Disney will be the only stations carrying
original cartoons along with Nick.

Quiet Desperation...
And Comedy Central.
