Why would anyone sit in their home staring at a clock from 11:59 PM to
midnight-- and then as it strikes 12, run out to go shopping?
What store OPENS at midnight?

I've only seen the commercial once, so I may be wrong, but does
it show the store *opening* at midnight? Or simply that batch
of customers *arriving* at midnight?

Did you hear a zooming sound above you during the ad, perchance?

Why would anyone take a TV commercial literally?

Yeah, it's supposed to represent last minute shopping, and since most
stores close at 6 or 7pm on Christmas Eve....

Reminds me of all those sitcom Thanksgiving episodes, where the
character is making Thanksgiving dinner and keeps running out to the
store. How many grocery stores (or anything else) are open Thanksgiving
Day?

Around here, pretty much all of them, 'til like 5pm anyway.

The only day of the year that you can count on everything being closed
is Christmas, and even then, there is always 7-11.

Blockbuster isn't.......I have to open Christmas Day :(

Or any other convenience store that sells gasoline and the truck stops.

Kmart was open. Most grocery stores *are* open Thanksgiving, but with
limited hours. We put our dinner together, then ran down to get a

Not around these parts. There used to be a chain of stores that was
known for hours on holidays, but it went out of business years ago.
None of the remaining majors chains are open on Thanksgiving. Some
independents might be.

Might be a regional thing. I went to college in Missouri back in the
late 70's and nothing was open on Sundays, let alone holidays.

That was quite a ways back. The blue laws have pretty much gone away. I
could be a union thing, the holiday pay might be too much.

30 years ago that was generally true most places. In the last 10 years,
holiday openings are fairly common.

Usually all of them, at least until 2-4pm.
As a former grocery/department store employee, I feel sorry for the
employees of stores that keep long hours on holidays. You can bet the
employees working the holidays did not volunteer to work. Usually the

I asked, and the employees are for the most part volunteers. Some of
the very newest workers and bag boys are conscripted. But checker level

lowest paid employees will be scheduled to work, and depending on
whether they are full or part time, may not even qualify for holiday
pay.
I was the head of the candy department and had to set up and take down
holiday candy displays. I was required to come in after the holiday
(usually at midnight) to reduce all the prices and condense or move
the leftover holiday merchandise. I was never allowed to start work
before midnight on a holiday, because I was at the top of their pay
scale. When I see or hear of a store being open late on a holiday
(Christmas Eve is considered the holiday in retail, for employee pay
since they are all, or should be, closed on Christmas), it makes me
think the company is either cheap or desperate.
