I'm moving soon, and there's a satellite dish at the new place. What
I want is the ability to record more than one program at a time. Is
this is a matter of selecting the right receiver, or do I actually
need multiple receivers?
I tried both companies' Web sites, but came up empty, probably
because I didn't know the right vocabulary for my search term.

Research the Directv Tivo model HR10250. These might be scarce but

Look for "HR10-250" also, people spell it both ways.

Circuit City still had them about three weeks ago, price after rebate
was $200 or $300, I forget. Got one back in Feb ($400 then) and am very
pleased with it. Yes, it can record two programs at once, even while
you watch something recorded earlier. Will record high definition
programs also. Room for perhaps 250 hours of 'regular' TV, 30 hours
perhaps if all HD programs. To get HD and capability to record two
shows at once, you need a DirecTV dish with 3 LNBs since there are 3
satellites involved. You would run two cables from the dish to the two
connection on the back of the unit. If you are lucky you might be able
to use the existing outside mounting and base for the dish. Aiming it
is the trick, consider a professional installer.

Nah, I wouldn't advise getting a DirecTV TiVo model since they're
abandoning them for their own-made models. They don't plan to support
firmware for them. It'll be an ancient door stop in a couple of
years........

Even if they were abandoned by DirecTV, which I think highly unlikely,
if you paid $300 for the unit you'd have had two years of advanced
extertainment technology for $12.50 a month.

I have had Series 1 Tivo's, Series 2 Tivos, stand alone Tivo's and now
run a few HDTivo's. I also have Dish and Bell PVR's and there is no
comparison. I pay for a subscription to DTV just so I can use my Tivo.
Who cares if DTV doesnt provide you with new firmware? I am still
running 2.52 on my Sony T=60 series 1's and they work fine.
I say go for Tivo, not the DTV one and enjoy what you can do with it.
Telnet, ftp, extraction, web access for programming etc. None of these
can be done with the others. It also has dual tuners to record 2
channels at once while watching a third.
Just my 2cents worth but I have enjoyed real Tivo for almost 10 years
now.

he DirecTv Tivo is so awesome though. I have had one for two years
now and love both the the Tivo interface which has some features that
many other DVRs do not and the dual channel recording capability.
