I know I'm a little late on the curve on this, but I didn't even know this
thing existed until a few weeks ago when Entertainment Weekly wrote it up.
I thought it was very cheesy, but understandably so and clearly, I'm not
the target market. I can see why the show's formula works though.

The news media has been very fond of the production, writing favorable
prominent reviews such as in Newsweek. Disney Channel is usually
ignored.
I must say I was totally surprised by the favorable reception. I
didn't think kids would like it--it seemed so old fashioned for what
kids are into today. In other words, are today's kids into 1930-1940
musicals or Judy Garland Mickey Rooney "let's put on a show!" type of
stuff? Would kids like the Music Man or Oklahoma?

Everything about High School Musical has been engineered for maximum tween
likeability, from the casting, to the setting to the dance and music style.
It's also very feel-good Disney with a message that it's ok to be yourself
and everyone around you supports you in your individuality. So I'm not
surprised kids like this *particular* musical.
I'm not sure we can extrapolate that kids would like Oklahoma or The Music
Man specifically.

Lots of people have lost money, and few have made money, trying to
figure out what kids will "go for" (that day!)...

Although they didn't dwell on it, I found the fact that Sharpay danced with
her brother kind of weird.
Apparently, there are 2 sequels planned and they want to take the thing to
broadway too. So if you've got tweens wearing out your CD player... brace
yourselves.
If Disney wants more musicals ideas. I've got one. It's about this
businessman who adopts these 5 orphans...
