The Spanish version of Ugly Betty was a telenovel. It had a
fixed-length of 65 episodes to tell its story from beginning to final
chapter. Do you think the English version will last as long
David...

It ran for 169 episodes, and also had a sequel.

The article I read said "13 week telenovel" which is only ~65 parts.
How did you get 169? Are those 3 separate & distinct novels?
David...

It ran for three seasons and 169 episodes. You can look it up.

It's not telenovel, anyway, it's telenovela. However, one characteristic of
the telenovelas is that they tend to have fixed lengths - but not always one
particular fixed length.

Telenovela = Telenovel when translated to english. And I believe you
about the length. I was just curious about the format. I thought it
might be one of these deals:
Episode 1-65 = Telenovela #1
Episodes 66-130 = Telenovela #2
Episodes 131-169 = Telenovela #3
i.e. Each year was a separate, stand-alone story.

(approximatel three seasons)?
Also, how closely is the English version following the original Spanish
story?

The original (Yo Soy Betty La Fea) was Colombian. The Spanish (as opposed
to Spanish-language) version is, Yo Soy Bea, is currently the highest rated
show in Spain, averaging a 30 share (30 per cent of all current viewers).
The Mexican version, La Fea Mas Bella, is running Monday through Friday on
Univision currently. The five daily episodes are the five highest rated
shows on Univision, and, in fact, draw more viewers than any show on the
CW.
Details, including the name of the main character, vary from country to
country, but the general frame is the same; unattractive but intelligent
girl goes to work for fashion/media company, paired with highly attractive
male boss (the plot that she is deliberately hired to have a competent aide
that won't attract womanizing boss isn't always followed, but occurs
frequently).
In Colombia and the U.S. it's Betty (Beatriz in Colombia)
In Mexico, it's Lety (Leticia)
In Isreal it's Esti
In Spain, it's Bea (Beatrice)
In India, it's Jassi (Jasmeen)
In Russia, it's Katya
In Germany, it's Lisa (Elisabeth)
In the Netherlands, it's Lotte
In every country, so far, it's a hit. The show concept obviously vibrates
complete.
