The New Galactica is good, but not great. (seasons 1/2)

If handled properly, even hated characters can be good for the story.
In Babylon 5, Londo was a hateful character (starting wars/ allying
with the enemy) but because of the depth of his character, we end-up
feeling sorry for him instead. He becomes a tragic character.
Joetheone...

Londo was great!
How can you hate somebody with a prehensile dick? And a Napolean outfit and
vampire accent?

Hell, even Bester had a human dimension.

I never watched Babylon 5 but that's a good point. Often hated characters
are more entertaining to watch than the good guys. It seems to me in order
to have a character like that they need to have "good guys" who can play off
that type of character. If everyone is made despicable by varying degrees
it can get old fast.

actually can think of quite a few shows I think are much better. But it's
all just taste and opinion. This ain't rocket science.

Once again, anything Star Trek is bad in my eyes. DS9 looked like some
telenovels...
|
.
I honestly don't see any connection between Dune (mythological/ gritty)
and Star Trek (technological/ sterile). Not even close.
Obveeus...
|
Regular Star Trek wasn't the Star Trek that was being compared, though. DS9
was being compared. DS9 was very touchy feely mythological, moreso than any
of the other Trek series.
telenovels...
|
I know. I still don't see the connection. Dune took place on a desert
planet. DS9 was on a high-tech space station.
And the "mythology" part of DS9? Just a bunch of aliens living in a
wormhole. Something real that you could touch.
|
|
And, I find it strange you hate Ron Moore's DS9 but like Ron Moore's
BSG. They both have a similar type of storytelling, with dark
characters living in dangerous times, since they're produced by the
same man.
Well whatever.
|
bad Dune-like (or Dune for dummies and children) story. In fact, the
only good Star Trel I remember was Season 3 (or parto of it) of
Enterprise - mainly because it did not look like Star Trek at all.

Yeah...we get it...you're a fan. There weren't very many of you. Get over
it. Your opinion is noted. I swear if I read this post again you go in the
bin.

.
Precisely. It's good but not great. I tried to rewatch season 1
reruns, and found I couldn't. It was too dull. Season 2 was much
better, but then it left a bitter taste with the final 2-3 episodes.
What a letdown.
Have the people who claim the New Galactica is the "best" or "you have
to love it" not exposed themselves to superior stories such as Babylon
5, DS9, Gone with the Wind, Tale of Two Cities, Casablanca, Ben Hur,
Patton? They all run circles around the New Galactica in terms of
story, characters, and depth.

I did not realize that Gone With the Wind, Tale of Two Cities,
Casablanca, Ben Hur, or Patton had ever been television shows. Can you
tell me when they were on?
I don't believe anyone has claimed that BSG is the greatest artistic
work ever. So, you might as well compare it to the Great Gatsby or
Gravity's Rainbow. I think they are claiming it's the best show on TV
(-currently-, being implicit in that statement), which would also
preclude B5 and DS9.
|
The New BSG is okay, but nowhere near as good as other masterpieces
from the past. Perhaps the fans have not exposed themselves to these
superior works?

So this is the point where everyone jumps up and says not only that a
show jumped the shark, but that they never ever liked it?

I've never liked it for a minute. It's so hateful that I keep getting drawn
back into it. *

Please show me where I said "I don't like BSG". I never said that.
|
It amazes me how people are like sheep. I'll say something different. I
still like it. I'm sorry that you never. What high standards you must
have, and I find it sad that you are never satisfied about a programme
until 10 years after its been cancelled.

(BTW, I found Gone with the wind an awfully boring movie)

Or perhaps they have been exposed, and you're simply wrong. *Ben-Hur*
artistically superior to new BSG? You must be joking sir.

??? Ben-Hur won the Best Picture Oscar. Did BSG win that award (or
the tv equivalent)? No.

And Greenday won three Grammys. So what? It doesn't really say that
much about the quality of anything.

No special effects awards don't count. It's the "best picture" award
that matters.

They gave away awards to 5 different tv shows. They didn't say BSG was
the "best", but merely 1 of 5 shows they happened to like. Try again.
(shrug) Compare Ron Moore's other series than: Star Trek DS9. It runs
circles around BSG... better actors, better production, better writing.

heh, I'm still thinking that Moore started out trying to turn BSG in
the "Anti-Trek" on purpose :-)
And, boy, is he succeeding. Aside from the sf setting, I don't know if
you can get any more "anti-Roddenberry" than BSG. Each and every
"human" character is as nasty and vile as Roddenberry's "humans" were
at the extreme other end of the spectrum...
nightbird...
|
Remember that a lot of trek fans considered DS9 just as "anti-trek"
because he dealt with the dark unseen corners in the trek universe that
Roddenberry didn't want to see. There is even a line in one episode
where Bashir asks Sisko if the Federation were to face the kind of
trial they eventually do, would they be any better than the Romulans or
the Cardassians. In many ways, they weren't. Moore doesn't take a
sunny view of human history and both series show it.
Stephen Fairchild...

Well, I consider In the pale moonlight to be my favourite DS9 episode.

It's a TV show, with mostly B actors. People tend to think whatever is
the newest rave is the best ever. The only test, is the test of time, and by
then we've all moved on to the next thing. I try not to take it too
seriously.
