The Jeffersons - Why's the film look so fuzzy?

Did ABC (CBS?) use inferior, cheap stock while filming this tv show?
(Or was it primitive videotape?) I've seen old shows, but they never
looked as fuzzy as the Jeffersons.

According to reviews of the dvds I looked up, it was done on 70s
videotape which is notorious for looking fuzzy. Also, there is no
correlation between how good some shows look when cleaned up for DVD
and their counterparts in syndication. I remember when TV Land and/or
Nick at Nite was running Mary Tyler Moore a few years ago and the
picture was somewhat fuzzy and sound always sounded distant, like it
was recorded underwater, but the dvds are pretty darn spectacular!

If you want to see something that looks really bad, take a quick look
at any LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE episode airing on Hallmark (or
whatever it's on these days). I was changing channels and came upon an
episode. It looked like someone had coated the lens with Vaseline.
