That's one of the things that looks so terrible. The Enterprise is above and

The Enterprise isn't an aircraft flying in an atmosphere, so any
manuever that resembles an aerodynamic banking turn (for
instance, the starboard turn the E-refit makes in the Mutara
nebula in TWOK) would just be wrong. There's no canon info
as to whether the impulse engines are articulated or if turns
are accomplished with side thrusters (the use of thrusters in
TMP would suggest the latter). If it's all done with thrusters,
then directional changes under impulse power would tend to
look like the ship suddenly being shoved in the direction of
the turn. Real-world, a close look at the stock footage
suggests that they just rotated the image in the matte process.

in front of the DM (which appears to be flying backwards). Sulu fires the
phasers... and they hit its tail.
The shots don't gel together. The viewscreen shots show the view as the
Enterprise flies over the machine, the wide shots show it just sitting
there, creeping forward, *in front of* the machine, the phasers hit the
machine's tail as if it's flown along the length of the machine.
Why is it necessary for the Enterprise to be moving at high speed? How about
trying to avoid getting shot at? The dangerous end of the Machine is the
front. It doesn't take a genius level of intellect to figure out the best
place to be is behind it.
