Even though it wasn't a pleasant episode, it was well done and came to
a sensible ending.

I think that the show ws pretty clear about their being 12 cylon 'human
looking' models. The other cylons do not coulnt in that total of 12, so
there are still 5 'unknown' models.
BTW, we know that the cylon raiders download and 'reincarnate' from Scar.
Do the basestars or other cylon biologic units reincarnate as well?

I'll give it a 4.5. Ron Moore in the podcast said the retaliation against
the collaborators was based on post-WWII France. I suspect this
kind of thing happens everywhere after an occupation ends. The
president's subsequent pardons reminded me of the tack that Nelson
Mandela took in South Africa that stressed reconciliation over
retribuation.
As far as the "soap" element of the show is concerned, I did expect
Kara to cut off her hair after the break-up with her husband. ;)

I also wonder if this will be opening the door for something with Lee --
after he spends few more hundred hours in the gym.

She did cut her hair, or it was implied, in the SciFi web special that
ran right after the show online. Kara walked up to a basin in the
latrine, looked at herself in a small mirror, felt her hair and not
liking what she saw she then hiked up a pant leg revealing a combat
knife strapped to her leg. It was assumed that she was about to cut her
hair short with that knife.

Lee's wife might not be too happy about that. I think that it is much more
likely that Starbuck's romantic themes will continue to revolve around her
current husband and reconciliation with him.

So, Jammer finally gets the cock. Dramatically, I guess they had to
get rid of him in order to better save the worthier subject later but,
with all the character's flaws, it was still heart-wrenching to watch.
Baltar's dream gave me a good chuckle and shows again how delightfully
warped some of the writers of this show tend to be.
And a lot of other good stuff. Hell, worth another
5.0
for moi.

My rating is 3.0. Good stuff, but it shouldn't have taken up an
entire episode. It loses points for writer's fiat.

I thought that was perfectly in character for both of them.
Roslyn has always been depicted as a typical politician--she
cares about the will of the people to the extent that she can
use it for her purposes. Zarek's just the same. They have
different ideals, that's all.
But I'm disappointed in how willingly Zarek steps down from
the Presidency. It smacks of writer's fiat. I knocked down
the episode from 3.5 down to 3.0 because of this.
The problem is that Adama fundamentally respects the rule
of law. If Zarek had insisted upon his right to the
Presidency then Adama would have supported him.
It would have gone against Adama's basic ideals to
undermine President Zarek's authority.
Mark Nobles...
|
Perhaps he would have, but remember when Zarek told Adama and Roslin
about his star chamber, Adama's reaction was "[t]his stops right now".
That may not be anything, but if Zarek had said "no, it doesn't",
Adama's next actions would have included terminating Zarek's
Presidency.
|
Yes, it's true that Adama did usurp Roslyn in a military
coup. But that was under far more severe circumstances,
and it was still the wrong decision (at least that's the
conclusion Adama himself comes to when he completely
and unreservedly capitulates to Roslyn).

Proof that you don't need space battles to make an intriguing episode.

It's actually hard to rate these episodes because I think this show was
fantastic right out of the box, and has not had a weak episode yet in

I certainly agree with your overall assessment, and I also
find that it does complicate rating the individual installments,
but it's not true that BSG can do no wrong. The cop-out
ending of the otherwise incredible Resurrection Ship story
from last season was astonishingly bad, and the first time
BSG really let me down. That was immediately followed by,
I believe, "Epiphanies," which wasn't just "weak"--it was
actively awful, in every particular, literally one of the worst
television experiences I've ever had.

You're one of the few who agrees with me that Res2 ended with a
copout ending. At least I think we're agreeing. I thought using
Gina to solve the predicament they got themselves into (how to get
rid of Cain without alienating the audience to Adama) was weak.
Others I know thought it perfect poetic justice.
And then they compounded it with the pure Deus Ex Machina of
Epiphanies. Though I didn't have your visceral reaction to it.

OTOH, they needed something to show that the child is "special".
|
|
It should be said, however, that, while it was an
embarassingly awful and ill-conceived episode, the strength
of my reaction against it was a consequence of how great
the rest of the series has been. I suppose it's fortunate that
I'd had a taste of BSG done badly with the ending of
Resurrection Ship--I shudder to think how I may have
reacted if it had a proper ending, and I'd gone into
"Epiphanies" without having ever seen the show stumble.

I don't agree at all that the show was "fantastic right out of the box," but
I definitely agree that there hasn't been even a single weak show. That's
pretty amazing, for sure. The "Black Market" episode is widely derided, but
it isn't "weak," I don't care what anyone says. Episodes like tonight's,
however, clearly distinguish themselves.

Final Cut (up until the ending)
Flight of the Phoenix
Epiphanies (mmm, magic baby blood)
Black Market
Downloaded (great up *until* the sappy ending)
Possibly also The Captain's Hand. I can't really remember if anything
of significance happens in that episode, except for Apollo's promotion
to Commander.
None of the episodes sucked. They're just what I would have considered
the weaker ones.

I thought Black Market was a good one. It showed what life was like in
the RTF. However, I still don't see why people would still care about
paper money (i.e. the fiat money). Something else should have replaced

Mediums of exchange that are not consumable are very useful.
raphfrk...

As long as they are replaceable it doesn't matter. This is why I
suggested alcohol from stills.
What happens is that the manufacture rate will match the consumption
rate, and the stock that is in the economy represents the currency.
One of my issues with the paper money is that without a bank it is a
hell of alot less valuable as you cannot convert it into smaller
denominations. Also, each person would only have had whatever money
they were carrying. This would push up the value of each unit ... if
it remained as the currency. However, a more likely result is that the
currency would collapse and the black market would switch to something
else.
Vodka was a de facto currency unit in the USSR even though it was
consumable.

it. Maybe cigarettes, alcohol spirits or maybe antibiotics. It would
need to be small and of relatively high value. Actually, spirits from
private stills could end up being the currency as more of it could be
made.
Ofc, the government may have just mandated that people still use the
fiat currency ... but that will only work if they have a banking system
of some kind and probably taxes.

I think there was a throwaway line about the VP candidate that Roslin dumped to
go with Baltar to the effect that he was trying to get a money economy
going again in the fleet.

can honestly say that about any other show I've loved.
Congratulations to Ronald D. Moore, David Eich, and all the rest of the
cast and crew that set out week to week to "do things you can't do on
