"A Tale of Two Cities"
10-4-06 Lost

Jonathan Roberts...
I'll give it a 4.0 -- the "Club Med for Psychopaths" at the start was
something else.

pv+usenet...
3.5. Let the messing with our minds recommence. *

Ubiquitous...
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of
wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was
the epoch of incredulity, _it was the season of Light, it was the season
of Darkness_, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we
had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going
direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the
period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest
authorities insisted on its being received, _for good or for evil_, in
the superlative degree of comparison only."

Four stars -- The pre-credits teaser was a five star but the rest wasn't
so great.

Was the Losteria Lane Book Club reviewing "Carrie"?

How did Goodman join the Tailies ten minutes after they crashed from
an hour away (according to Benry)?

"You're not my type?" Hmmm, I wonder if Sawyer is his type?

ANOTHER Jack flashback? So Jack's a stalker? Great...

Sawyer isn't your average bear (fishcuits).

Kate won a makeover and breakfast with Benry! Woohoo!

5 stars (Carton)

0-1 stars (Defarge)

PuddinTame...
I'll give it a 4.0

I've learned not to expect too much from this show so consider my score
a back-handed compliment.

I liked Jack's refusal to cooperate with his captors.

No sign of Locke or Michael and judging by the promo we won't be seeing
them next week either.

Default User...
From what I understand, Harold Perrineau won't be a regular cast member
this season. I expect they're basically done with him and we'll only
see him in flashbacks.

Of course, this is "Lost", so I could be completely wrong. My
prediction-fu for this show has been . . . less than I might have hoped
for.

Brian Thorn...
3.25

Great opening scene. Downhill fast from there. Levelled off at the
same boring pace that ruined Season 2. I'm sick and tired of the
Others.

But hey, it was the best episode of season!

Smoke...
What a great way to start the third season! 4.9

Mark...
1.0
It starts of with a retcon of the plane crash. And continues with a Jackback
where we learn, Jack is an asshole. Gee, never would have figured that one
out. They had all summer, and this is the best they could come up with? Oh
well, no hobbit, so that saved it from being a zero.

et472...
And they showed Kate in a shower, which we've not seen since at least
last spring.

Bob (but not THAT Bob)...
4.5 - and the mystery deepens - like how is it the Others are so
organized and have dossiers on everybody on the plane, yet can't seem to
get their CDs in their proper cases?

Show opens with Juliet opening a Talking Heads CD, but when it starts
playing, out comes old Petula Clark.

jan.gyn...
I'd forgotten how much I liked that 'Downtown' song.
-jan

Gio...
Let's see.

3 is the basis, +1 for nekkid Kate, +1 for the Others village (Stephen
King!), +1 for Julie Bowen, -2 for the absence of well.. everything
else.

4 stars, good solid start.

stocksami...
4.9

Everything turned upside down. Lot's of twists.

depeche_road...
5 stars Weird, and very interesting. Totally thought Jack's Dad was
sleeping with the wife (what they wanted us to think). I guess we know
where they kept some of the animals (loved that all three lostaways
seemed to be rats in a lab- do what's required to get the cheese). For
a few minutes I was disappointed thinking they were going to induct
Kate into their "family", but then Ben said the next 2 weeks would be
very unpleasant. And then Kate's freaky reaction in the cage- very
unsettling. Will it be some king of V for Vendetta thing where she'll
thank them afterwards?? Anyways, I'm really happy to have Lost back and
for all these new mysteries to think about.

wdstarr...
Can anyone explain the episode title? I'm not seeing the
connection, allusion, what-have-you to the Dickens tale.

rwgibson13...
Good question. Given the Jack flashbacks, I suppose you could make the
case for a contrast between the "Other's" town in the opening scene
with the flashback scenes in LA. Maybe it doesn't go anywhere beyond
the obvious title...

RWG (but, seeing this is "Lost," I somehow doubt it :-)

David...
Is there some joy people get out of being cynical? Or maybe it's
considered cool, like how being disinterested was "cool" in the 90's
and being rebellious was "cool" in the 50's? Lindelof has said
repeatedly that he has the show planned out. Do you know him personally
or have some other reason to suspect that he's a bold-faced liar?

John Schilling...
Well, he works in Hollywood. That's second only to Washington, D.C,
on the list of places where, if someone works in the town's flagship
industry with any degree of success, it's a pretty safe bet that they
are a bald-faced liar.

There's nothing "cool", or joyful, about it. It's just the inevitable
result of a three-digit IQ applied to observation of the real world.

Growltiger...
Spectacular teaser set in the village of the Others; the other acts were
good and in sum this was an intriguing episode: 4.

I wonder if we will get an episode where the flashbacks take us from at
least the arrival of the Black Rock on through the arrival of the Others?

cloud dreamer...
4.85

Surely, the best of times...

David...
4.7 (.10 added just for bringing in Julie Bowen)

Weird wild wacky stuff

Sawyer in a zoo exhibit... hilarious

Fred Furia...
I've enjoyed it too (only finished 4 books so far). But it did hurt me
when he lost track of specific details (e.g., book 3 he acquires a .38
caliber pistol for each of his two partners, and to start the next book
they are all three sharing his original .45's). As far as I know, he
did apologize for that and other detail mistakes.

But I am not sure he has called the whole series a mistake. It's been
outstanding work. I just wish he had written them a little closer
together. It's hard for me to get into a series at the age of 15 and
get back into it at the age of 35.

BTR1701...
For the last four books, I just bought them and put them on my shelf and
didn't read them until the series was complete, at which point, I
started over from the beginning and re-read the first three and
experienced the entire story as a whole. Works much better that way.

Grue...
I guess its safe to say Sawyer isn't "smarter than the average bear".

wdstarr...
Not that they were necessarily average bears.

~consul...
He was right though when he asked how many bears there were.

Steven L....
The Blast Door Map said it was an experiment in genetic breeding to see
if it was possible to breed polar bears that could survive in tropical
climates. Essentially scientific curiosity, that's all.

Great performance from Matthew Fox. Not Emmy-worthy but much more than
he's shown before. OTOH Michael Emerson should get awarded for pulling

Steven L....
I gotta say, this was the best Jack flashback backstory of the entire
series so far. It also put into perspective Jack's jealousy of Sawyer
over Kate (cf. "Hunting Party"): Jack can be dangerously obsessive over
a woman he thinks is "his."

off so much creepy.

librarymom03...

Wayyyyyyyyyy too many commercials. (-1)

ravenlynne...
Really! Every 10 minutes!

Grue...
Season premiere of a top rated show...what did you expect?

Major ChrisB...
ford sponsorship and no commerical breaks at all?

Really interupts the dramatic tension and suspense
Nothing really new (-1)

Henry's name is Ben. His signifcant others name is Julie. We got to see the

What makes you think she's Ben's "significant other"?

Wasn't the other guy in the hatch that was helping whats-his-name push the
button name Ben? I don't mean Desmond I mean the other guy.

wdstarr...
Maybe you mis-heard "Inman?"

Desmond was in the hatch with Kelvin Inman, who spoke a lot of being
there with "Radzewski" (I almost certainly misspelled that). When
the five-person cross-island expedition found the huge pile of
notebooks-in-pneumatic-cannisters that had been spit out from the
"Pearl" site and Kate read a bit from one at random, it mentioned
"S.R. moves ping-pong table." Whether "S.R." was Radzewski or
someone else, I don't think we've ever heard of anyone named "Ben"
associated with the hatch.

Ryan Robbins...
I don't recall seeing which King book it was, so I think's it a big
assumption to make that it was "new."

to where the tail section ended up. Nothing new?

Major ChrisB...
nothing new of any particular importance. So important, in fact, that you
got one of the names wrong. I dont know why we care about shark and bear
cages. The fact they had modern stuff was interesting but other than that I
feel I learned nothing new about the show.

Anim8rFSK...
They're also in contact with the outside world.

pv+usenet...
And if Juliet is to believed, they have close connections to the real
world - she claimed she was holding Jack's Dad's autopsy results.

Rehashing of the Sarah/Jack breakup (-.5)

Grue...
She told Jack she was seeing someone else, and was leaving him in season 2.
Now we've seen their divorce, and her someone else. It was an epansion of
what we already knew, a more developed, more detailed description, and a
progression of their story.

You didn't want that?

Overall: 2.5

GarondoMarondo...
By this point this should be a known fact, you can't watch ANY show on
tv live because of all the commercials, record everything, not only
will you save time you'll enjoy the shows that much more.

tim_witort...
Having had TiVo for several years, I forgot how tedious it
could be to have to watch all the commercials. It did seem they
broke away to commercials more than usual, but since I just
blip over them, I didn't lose any continuity or drama. I know
not everyone can have a DVR, but it's amazing how much better
TV viewing is with one. (when it works... my TiVo has failed
to record a couple of shows lately :^()

..
Garondo Marondo!

Michael Johnson...
Was I the only person who noticed the housing compound was sitting in
the middle of one big ass crater?

Major ChrisB...
but a rehash and nothing we didn't know and nothing we needed to know.

Major ChrisB...
not partifularly....i want to see more island, more of the survivors. It's
lost...it's not The Jack Show yet it was all Jack all the time tonight...and
it sucked. they really need to start moving along....the first half the
season 2 did the exact same thing...was in that rut there with the charlie
and claire mess...

Really interupts the dramatic tension and suspense
Nothing really new (-1)

Steven L....
The Others have up-to-date contact with the outside world: Juliet got
Jack's detailed dossier (VERY detailed) in just the 2 months that Jack
has been on the island.

That's brand new.

And with TiVO or even a VCR with the Automatic Commercial Advance
feature, you won't have to worry about the commercials.

Rehashing of the Sarah/Jack breakup (-.5)
Overall: 2.5

ravenlynne...
It started at 5.0 then dropped down to 3.5. The opening was fantastic.
Then Sawyer botched his escape. Then Kate sat and sniveled. Then

wdstarr...
I do hope that Jack is playing a lot dumber than he really is. I
mean, does he _really_ believe that these people couldn't/didn't rig
a food slot in a metal door?

Jack snivelled.

Steven L....
4.9

Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Twilight Zone and Lost Horizons, all in
one episode! Plus Michael Emerson's wonderfully creepy performance as

jgmclean0...
Hm. What did you see as the Trek reference? Some of that Al Courage

Steven L....
As we've been discussing, the entire subplot of Jack with Juliet
(including the glass-enclosed cage he's in) was an allusion to the Star
Trek pilot film "The Cage," which got reworked into the Star Trek
episode "The Menagerie."

Jack = Captain Pike
Juliet = Vina
Ben = Keeper of Talos IV

battle music could only have helped, but I didn't hear any.

Steve M. Mann...
What? Jack behind the clear wall (we don't know if it was truly glass)
was the Trek reference and that was the most obvious of all. At least to
me. It was a reference to "The Cage" (or The Menagerie).

Ben/Henry. What's not to like?

Shaping up as this season's Gregory Itzen.
