WHY was SG1 cancelled?

Ken from Chicago...
Has there been any news that explains WHY?

It wasn't the ratings. Was it the cost? The expected increased cost of
renewal making profit shrinking? The actors wanted to move on?

That way there are no repercussions for the cheating sluts.

Exhibitionist...
Wrong again, as usual.

Anim8rFSK...
There are no such thing as male sluts anyway. Sluts are, by definition,
female.

.

Impossible. None of my girlfriends ever became pregnant.
Therefore I currently have no children.

videonovels...
.

I think I would have noticed if my ex-girlfriend(s) suddenly swelled in
size. None of them did.

And if they had, I'd still insist upon a genetic test before I go
marrying her.
Actually SciFi Channel decided not to purchase an eleventh season of

Anim8rFSK...
Sigh. You just never tire of being wrong, do you?

videonovels2010...
.

Since we're ultimately doomed to die, the MAIN purpose in life is to
replace ourselves with children (so the species does not die-out when
we die). This is not just a good idea, but it's also hard-wired into

Atlas Bugged...
Oh. I guess that settles that.

our brains through the last several million years of selection. (Those
without the desire for children, naturally went extinct, as did their
anti-procreative genes.)

Atlas Bugged...
Hmmm, I don't *feel* particularly extinct. Well, maybe after *another*
half-century of living, my hard-wiring will kick in and I'll want children
for some reason *other* than as raw ingredients for my meat-loaf recipe.

Therefore, men desire the women who are most healthy to produce
children. The youthful with young fertile eggs, not the old with
damaged eggs and/or no eggs at all. Again, hard-wired into our brains.

Atlas Bugged...
As a professional criminal attorney and an amateur (but highly-motivated!)
student of female anatomy, I see that there are several billion indictments
about to be presented to grand juries. That is, of course, if you are
correct.

.
Looking from the opposite side, women desire men who can protect their
children & provide food/money. AGAIN, a preference for youthful men
who can still walk, not old men who need a cane.

Atlas Bugged...
"SWM in good health, 51, secure job, healthy 401K, "hard" wired, (heh, heh)
seeks girl about to have her first menstrual cycle 4 intense & intensely
brief relationship, based on the fact that neither has any choice. Entire
cheerleading squad a plus. Call 555-1212, business hours only, please."

Stargate SG1. The shows actual owners, MGM/Sony is shopping the program
around to see if they can another cable channel will pick it up another
season. Or failing that they will see if they can keep production going
as a miniseries or as a movie.

As to why it looks like the lower ratings this year probably were the cause.

So at this point SG1 hasn't actually been canceled yet.

Eva...
OK, so it probably isn't as simple as that, but why don't MGM/Sony finance
the show themselves and then sell it to networks? Can't they afford the one

Troy.Heagy...
.

An alternate outlet would be syndication to ~200 local tv stations.
MGM may be looking at that option right now.

Invid Fan...
I know the whole UPN/WB merger has left some stations without
programing, but just buying the reruns has to be alot cheaper then

videonovels...
.

It doesn't have to be. MGM could set-up a deal where they charge the
same amount for Season 11 (new) as they currently charge for Season 9
(previously-aired on SFC). I mean, the price is whatever MGM decides
it should be.

If I were MGM, I would do this for the local tv stations:

Season 9 - 2006-7
Season 10 - 2007-8
Season 11 - (new) 2008-9 and charge the same price as I did for season
9/10

:-)

Troy.Heagy...
.

It probably will continue as a movie. But again, we were discussing
the *tv show*, not the movie sequels.

Anim8rFSK...
UPN's very existence left stations without programming. :-)

Billy No Mates...
Point taken. Just that after 10 years the scriptwriters probably need a new
challenge. And generating 20 off scripts for a season 11 would be far more
time consuming than a 2 hour movie. There is now a fan base out there to
make a movie based on the TV show work.

signing up for first run Stargate. Let's see... assume 22 episodes cost
around $30 million. If 200 stations sign up, that's $150,000 per
station for one hour of programing a week (if the price includes
repeats for the second half of the year).

million or so per episode?
Or would that be too much of a financial risk for them?

Anim8rFSK...
It's not what they do. Why should they produce show A financing it
themselves when they can produce show B instead having somebody else pay
for it?

She was born August 28, 1965. I suspect this affects the math a bit.
do you really think an actor these days want to stay in a same role for
10 years? when i see teal'c, jackson, carter, i think that's the crew
of sg-1. when i see macgyver, i think macgyver. in fact, macgyver was
in a credit commercial recently.

Well, Sci-Fi is renaming itself "Surge TV." So shedding some of the

The whole SciFi/Surge story yesterday was a hoax. Not happening.

whodunit...
Denial, or do you have a link for this?

Invid Fan...
There's no link saying it is happening, at least no link to a site that
networks actually send real info to.

SoHillsGuy...
So, let me understand. I'm supposed to provide a link to something
that really isn't happening and was never happening in the first place?
And from where would that be?

How about you providing a link saying it IS happening...

Reasoned Insanity...
Oh lovely, someone trying the get someone else to disprove a positive
assertion that hasn't been proven.

Troy.Heagy...
Put another way - You can't prove a negative. You can't prove that SFC
is not renaming itself surge.

Invid Fan...
Well, actually you can, if you can point to a SFC web page saying
they're not.

Troy.Heagy...
No because the disbeliever could simply say, "The website has not yet
been updated, but they will be changing to Surge soon." It's like
talking to a wall, because no matter what you say to try to disprove
the rumor, they'll keep insisting that it WILL happen.

So, that's why you "can't prove a negative" and need to flip it around
and say, "Okay. Prove the SFc is changing to Surge." But the burden
of proof on the claimant.

.

BTW, I may have found a reason why SFC canceled SG1.

NBC has been doing poorly in ratings, so NBC is pushing its cable
stations to cancel older shows & make room for NBC productions.

SG1 is MGM, so Sci-Fi may have been pressured from NBC... of course
they deny it, but it seems a possible explanation.

All you can do is show that evidence is lacking, therefore the
assertion "SFC is changing its name" is likely false.

erilar...
I was tempted to ask what calendar the originator was using. . .

wdstarr...
Absolutely. For one thing, if it _was_ happening then
truth-in-advertising laws would have required them to call
it "Purge TV."

sci-fi elements of the network may be necessary (since the point of
Surge TV is to embrace the numbers brought it by new shows like Who
Wants to Be a Superhero and ECW).
