There haven't been many truly funny movies released in the past 5 years
but I think Ferrell is one of the few comedians still coming through.
"Anchorman" and "Talladega Nights" were great and "Elf," at the very
least, is the only recent Christmas movie that wouldn't make me run out
of the room screaming.

The way I see it, you can be Dave's guest where you sit down and
promote your latest movie or book or event, in which case you don't
have to be 'ON' but you may have something to talk about while
promoting, like a story about something that happened while filming or
a common interest that you would like to share with the host. But if he
was the stand-up comedian for the night, Will would HAVE to be funny.
THen you can decide.

I like him on SNL but I wait for his films to wind up on DVD, where
they're not must-see for me.
