Here's a link to one press conference in 1966. This is an interesting

By the way, that geocities website is a wonderful library of Beatles
press conferences and interviews. You can probably navigate to the home
page. IIRC there is a way to even do a word search.

Here's an interesting article. Note John's quote at the end:

Thanks for the link. Personally I think the aritcle makes a big tadoo
about almost nothing.
I have seen a photo or two over the years of Lennon demonstrating in
support of the IRA; IIRC he stated in an interview he had wanted to do
a concert in Belfast. I read an Lennon interview which I wish I could
quote exactly, but can't. Going by my memory, John essentially said he
opposed violence. However he went on to say that if the choice was
British violence against the Irish or IRA violence, he would support
IRA violence.
I think the bottom line is that John was very sympathetic with the
Irish cause in general and opposed British policies. The article makes
reference to John possibly agreeing to do a concert supporting the
Catholics and then one supporting the Protestants; I don't think that
shows John was confused at all. John supported the Irish in general
and I believe wanted to use peaceful means such as music to show that
support.
