TheBassMon...
anyone know?

donz5...
Pete Drake.

Jeff...
I thought his name was Nick, Don. Perhaps you are right. Is that George

BlackMonk...
Nick Drake is someone else, an English singer/songwriter. Very talented, and
a pretty good guitarist, too.

Dr. Strangemonde...
"If I had died long ago, I'd be Nick Drake now" - Al Stewart

DanKaye...
Also known as "Sneaky Pete", he played with the Byrds and tons of

poisoned rose...
You missed the point. Pete Drake is not "Sneaky Pete." Sneaky's last
name is Kleinow.

other people; he's THE steel guitar guy.

Bruce Dumes...
Pete played with the Flying Burrito Brothers and Dylan. Sneaky Pete is
great, but don't forget Buddy Emmons. He was literally one of the
inventors of the pedal steel guitar (the "Sho-Bud").

Sneaky Pete was more integrated into the rock circle, while Buddy was
more of a Nashville studio guy, so he never got the notoriety.

microknee finger...
Definitely Pete Drake.

playing harmonica
on 'IF not for you? I always thought it was Dylan.

microknee finger...
I'm not sure, but George *did* play the harmonica on Apple Scruffs (the
numerous outtakes of this song that have been bootlegged have made that
clear), so I would assume he did here as well.

BTW, I've read theories that John Lennon makes an uncredited appearance
playing slide guitar on "If Not For You." Listening to that song and
comparing it to John's slide work on Old Brown Shoe and For You Blue leads
me to believe it's true.

abe slaney...
I don't think there's any slide on OBS.

microknee finger...
Sure there is, it's the primary hook in the song, between the vocal lines.

abe slaney...
No, that's not a slide guitar. You can hear the fingers slide up the
frets, and you couldn't do that fingering with a slide in any case (riff
is played on 1st and 2nd strings - first double stop and then top string
down 2 frets)

microknee finger...
Are you talking standard tuning or open?

For some reason I had it in my head that I heard John playing slide on OBS
on one of those Nagra Tape Roll bootlegs, but I can't find it right now to
listen to.

abe slaney...
The Anthology version is deceptive; there's a guitar that initially
sounds a *lot* like the slide in "For You Blue" - same tone, same chord
voicing. I thought it was a slide too, for the first few seconds of the
song, but then it starts noodling around for the rest of the number on
some very un-slide-like riffs. But it's not the same part as on the
final recording anyway.

microknee finger...
Yeah, but I'm not talking about the Anthology demo. I used to have mp3s from
the "Get Back" sessions bootlegs, where George is introducing OBS to the
group on piano, and John really likes the song and is eager to start working
on it... I'm keen to listen to that again because I could have sworn John
was doing his part with a slide, but I may be wrong. Now I can't find the
dang things...
