One of my main beefs with Beatleology is the lack of approach to
technical issues such as sound room situation, instrumentation,
guitars, drums - that aspect. And the aspect of the breakdown of the
songs into these catagories - 1. who did what - who did harmonies. 2.
Where were they situated during singing dubs.. 3. How do they monitor
what's going on. You know it wouldn't be difficult. Take album by album
song by song. The story should be interesting in that it would show
progression in the studio from the Please Me, Please Me, days to Help!
You could even do a movie on it actually show the actors go thru the
motions of things that are of a technical nature - let's gather around
the mixing board, but tell what's going on - why are we putting sliders
in certain positions. Also if we could get info on how tracks were laid
down - drums, guitars, bass, - then vocals or vise-versa. There is a
website that break the songs down from music theory standpoint. If we
could get something from a who did what - song by song. Cause when I'm
listening to a Beatles song there is alot there - I just don't know
what - I can't break it down. I will take into consideration that
things were done on the fly from song to song. And also trade secrets
will stay trade secrets. The Lewisohn is out of print and conjectured.
I think we need a fresh start.

I don't mean to throw a curve here, but how much can we expect, and
more specifically, how much do we really need to know? I'm not sure I
want to know every aspect of every moment that The Beatles did
anything...their recording...their personal lives etc. Where do we
draw the line? Do we really want to know that Paul took a bathroom
break between take 4 and take 5 of "Rocky Raccoon"?
Please, don't get me wrong, I am also curious as to the why's and
wherefore's of The Beatles' productive years. Some 25-30 years ago, I
was frustrated by the paucity of such material available to the general
public. But since then, a plethora of knowledge has spilled
forth...mostly the Lewisohn projects, but also others...and it seems
that we have gone to the opposite extreme from the early 1980s.
Think about your own life. Certainly, there are aspects you are proud
about, sentimental and nostalgic about, and accomplishments you would
like detailed, but what about privacy...it's becoming an ever shrinking
commodity for all of us. Isn't there something sacred about
privacy...whether it's ours, or belonging to a group of four musicians
who were a tremendous influence upon the world?
Shouldn't some things be left for the ages to ponder?

I may shake your hand,
But I won't know your name,
The jokes in your language,
Don't come out the same.
