I just got a notice of ticket prices for the upcoming Stones concert:
$62, $101, $162, and $452 per person. $452?? Concert prices are out of
control these days. I can imagine what the scalpers are going to
charge.

You're a little behind the curve there, those were already the prices
on the first leg of their tour, when they came through the States last
summer. Scalpers will as always "charge" whatever consumers are
willing to pay, and I don't blame the Stones for trying to beat them to
it this time.

Supply and demand. If thousands and thousands of people stopped going
to see the Stones and other bands with high ticket prices, you'd see
those price drop like a rock.
As it is, people pay those prices, so why not charge what they can get?

also because all the big artists announce their tours as their Farewell
tour, so people are induced to think 'Hey, it's the last chance to see 'em
live' and decide to spend a fortune on the tickets...

So they announced this as their farewell tour? I wasn't aware of that.

No, not the Stones; I was talking in general.
|
So how are you, MatFox? How is Italy these days?
mattteo1963...
|
fine, txs, and you?
Here in Milan it's incredibly hot, and we all need holidays! :-)
Apart from the soccer scandals, the World championship, the son of the
King's scandal and the rest of our typical italian life ... we are still
here! :-)

What big name-high ticket price musicians have announced their current
tours as being "farewell"?
mattteo1963...
|
not necessarily a current tour, but through the years there have been
many, from Tina Turner to Phil Collins, at least here in Europe.
Maybe it's a more common marketing move here, to sell out tickets.
|
Certainly not The Stones, The Who, McCartney, Billy Joel. I can't think
of anyone of their stature (or lesser stature for that matter) who's
announced a "farewell tour".

I don't believe the Stones have ever done that, they've always laughed
that suggeston off....also cool.
Although Mick had a funny line in a talk with Rolling Stone at the
start of last year's tour if I remember. He said, no one ever asks him
that (if it's their final tour) at the END of a tour, at which point he
might give a different answer!

I got an email this morning from The Stones letting me know that I
could listen to one 7 songs from one of their shows (I forget which
one) over my telephone. Of course there's a charge.
Wow! What a bargain. I've always dreamed of being able to listen to 7
songs from a rock and roll concert over my telephone.

As a follow-up to my own post, I just reread the email from The Stones.
My apologies! It's not 7 songs, it's 7 MINUTES and the cost is $1.99.
If you figure that the average Stones's concert is about 120 minutes,
that comes out to $34.11 for the whole thing. Gee. what a bargain!
Of course The Who were recently webcasting an entire show or two for
.99.

1) Sadly The Who have (reportedly) dropped that. See
2) I'm reliably informed that if you ring the number for the Stones'
show phonecast, all you hear is the sound of cash registers!
