I would leave out Get My Mind Set on You (I hate that song).
Would replace with While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Don't know 9, 14, 15, and 16. Not overly thrilled with Crackerbox
Palace.
Jeff...
|
I love Crackerbox palace..and the way it was recorded. While my
guitar genty weeps
is a Beates song. It wasn't a hit with George as a solo artist.
JohnB...
|
But it was on his Live In Japan album.
|
|
But would put in:
Something
I Me Mine
DanKaye...
|
Okay, I'll agree with that. But leave on Crackerbox Palace, it's one
of my faves! (I also don't like Got My Mind Set On You, though with
repeated listenings I'm starting to like it a little...
camille...
|
OK! Crackerbox Palace stays.
Have you heard Weird Al's version of Got My Mind Set on You? ....
"This Song is Just Six Words Long." He nailed that one.

DanKaye...

No, I have not heard it. Weird Al can be pretty funny.
I was amazed to read, some time ago, only within the last year or so
actually, that Weird Al is VERY big at State Fairs, and things like
that, and makes a fortune doing them!
camille...
|
He can be funny a lot of time. I remember seeing him at a party once
around early '90s and he was with this really beautiful model sort of
woman and he was parading her around. He was really, "Hey look at me
everyone." She didn't seem too interested in him, however. Actually he
seemed quiet and even a little ill at ease.

Wasn't there already a greatest-hits album in the '70's, half-solo,
half-Beatles, called The Best of George Harrison?
UsurperTom...
|
George also didn't approve of Capitol mixing Beatle songs and solo
songs on the same album.
|
Runnnerr...
|
Yes. It was released in October, 1976. It had two very different
covers- one for The USA and one for England.
|
Jeff...
|
Yeah, but that didn't count. Most of the songs were with the Beatles.
Kind of a boring,
disapointing album.
|

I'd add "Love Comes to Everyone" - just because I happened to hear it
over the sound system in a restaurant Saturday night. I hadn't heard it
in 15-20 years, I'd forgotten how good it was.
Gary Parker...
|
I'd add:
Your Love is Forever
If That's What it Takes
Poor Little Girl (what a great tune)
Dear One
Soft Touch
Beware of Darkness (maybe his best of all??)
Isn't it a Pity
Apple Scruffs
Here Comes the Sun
Something
The guy wrote some classics. His mistake
(imho) was thinking he was prolific.
Jeff...
|
Who ever said that Harrison thought he was prolific? You're the
first I've seen
to write this.
|
Later brethren,
Gary (Riffking) Parker
|
Jeff...
|
I think Eric Clapton put a lot more life into this song than Harrison.
Compare the two
versions.
|
|
Jeff...
|
There's no way to come up with the best of George Harrison. Might as
well just buy the
individual albums..and enjoy..or make your own CD's of your favorites.
DanKaye...
|
I disagree. I LOVE George, but a lot of his albums had a lot of
filler; a Best Of is needed.
Jeff...
|
But you can't ever satisfy everybody with a "best of album", of
George's music.
Everyone has their favorites..and they might not agree with your
list.Do you understand what I am saying?
|
The Best Of that exists is actually quite good:
1. Something
2. If I Needed Someone
3. Here Comes The Sun
4. Taxman
5. Think For Yourself
6. For You Blue
7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
8. My Sweet Lord
9. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)
10. You
11. Bangladesh
12. Dark Horse
13. What Is Life
camille...
|
DanKaye,
I agree. This is a great list.
But I forgot to add eariler one of my own personal faves: Beware of
Darkness,.
Really fits the times these days:
"Beware of greedy leaders, they take you where you should not go."
I actually wanted to make a tee shirt with that line on it.
|
Jeff...
|
But..you're mostly naming Beatles songs..and not everyone agrees
that the Beatles
should be included with George's solo Material. I don't. Make a
list with the Beatles
and George solo. Doesn't that solve the problem?
|
And the Out of Print Best of Dark Horse is also excellent:
1. Poor Little Girl (this one I would delete)
2. Blow Away
3. That's The Way It Goes
4. Cockamamie Business
5. Wake Up My Love
6. Life Itself Listen
Jeff...
|
Listen? What song is that?
|
7. Got My Mind Set On You
8. Crackerbox Palace
9. Cloud 9
10. Here Comes The Moon
11. Gone Troppo
12. When We Was Fab
13. Love Comes To Everyone
14. All Those Years Ago
15. Cheer Down
So putting these 2 together would make a pretty good set.
Jeff...
|
Not in my opinion. Here's comes the moon is just a poor rehash of
Here comes the
Sun, and it wasn't even a hit. Neither was Gone Troppo, nor number
13 and 14, on
your list. Most people want to hear only hits..included on a best of
album.
|
One might argue that there needs to be MUCH more All Things Must Pass
on any "Best Of". However, I would argue that any GH fan should just
play the whole ATMP album from time to time, it is too great to just
take a few of the great songs from it!
Jeff...
|
Well, the same goes for the other albums of George's, but most people
won't take the
time..to give any of his other albums a chance. They just go with
what other people
say, and give in, and say "All things must pass" was his best album.
I disagree.
I say "Living in the Material World" was his best album...but who
cares what I think,
just like your opinion? People ought to just buy all of George's
albums, and make
their own CD's of their favorite songs. It's the only way this will
work. The same
applies to all of the ex Beatles solo albums.
|
However, if ATMP is to be represented then we are takinga bout a
Harrison Best Of BOX SET, because at least half the songs on ATMP
would have to be included.
Jeff...
|
That's just your opinion. Others have their own opinions.
DanKaye...
|
Absolutely. Just my opinion. That's what we do, here, isn't it? (-;
You are right, you can't satisfy everyone. It would be nice, though,
since The Dark Horse best of is out of print, if they would issue a
nice Best Of (NOT "Greatest Hits"; there is a difference!) that
included some of his best work on one lp or a double set, so that
people who missed out on some of it could hear it and be reminded that
there was some great music on some of George's albums that they didn't
buy because they had a lot of filler on them. (Again, imho.)
I think the Dark Horse best of was a particularly good collection, for
the most part, and if they added some stuff from Brainwashed it would
be really great. Then if they made it a 2cd set and added half a dozen
tracks from ATMP and Material World and etc, it would really be a
great set to have. I could make my own but I guess I'm too lazy...
Jeff...
|
Great response, Dan. I like your sense of humor. I got a little
carried away last night
having too much to drink. I should have shut up..from the beginning.
LOL
|
|
|
On such a box set, I would also add the instrumental "Marwa Blues" and
"Any Road" and a couple others from "Brainwashed.
|
|
Frank from Deeetroit...
|
How about "If Not For You" as number 17?
