I'd say Nowhere Man, only because other earlier songs that aren't
primarily about love still have at least a mention (such as ROB's "Well,
if you feel you like it, get your lover, then reel and rock it").

That also depends on whether this is defined as when the song was written,
versus recorded. For example, a few tunes recorded much later such as "When
I'm 64" were written by Paul when he was around 14 years old.
Also, if you consider first recorded song, then you could consider
instrumentals recorded by John/Paul/George during the Quarrymen/Silver
Beatles era, such as "Catswalk", "Cayenne", or "Cry For A Shadow".
If you consider only songs when they're released, and recorded after "Love
Me Do", then probably the answer is "Help!".

'Paperback Writer' was the first song I noticed especially that wasn't
a love song, but I don't have my books here to verify when it came
out, except I was in the eighth grade, I think.

Rain is another one (which obviously didn't chart as high). But these
songs came out on a single in '66. Nowhere Man was from '65.

Assuming you mean original songs rather than something like "Roll Over
Beethoven" or "Money"...maybe "Nowhere Man"?
