So which songs cause the most polarisation?

JohnB...
It seems most subjects about the Beatles can cause disagreement
somewhere, but sticking to songs, which do you think divide opinion
most?

Rerics...
Good Night falls into this category. There was a thread awhile back
that showed the love-hate dichotomy of this song.

I've seen criticisms of Hello Goodbye recently yet I think it's a great

Sean Carroll...
The thing about 'Hello Goodbye' is that, yeah, it's a great song ....
but it goes on for EVER AND EVER with the same two verses over and over
and OVER again! If I'm in a certain mood, I like it a lot, but if I'm in
another mood it really starts to grate after the first few minutes.
'Hello hello, I don't know why you say goodbye I say hello, hello hello,
I don't know why you say goodbye I say hello, hello hello, I don't know
why you say goodbye I say hello ...' If Paul had just gone to the effort
of coming up with more than two sentences of lyrics, it could have been
one of their greatest songs ever. JMO.

terra...
Always used to like it but it is severely overplayed by radio and I am burnt
on it.

single.
Likewise I'm really fond of Long Long Long but others seem to hate it.

fattuchus...
SNIP

According to Paul's Many Years From Now, Hello Goodby was a very
successful single. I think the melody is nice, but the lyrics reminds
me of something I expect to see on the Telatubbies or Sesame Street . .
. . too childish.

If only Paul had John to help him on the lyrics, that song ccould have
been much better.

Many don't like Revolution No 9 but few seem to really love it.

Sean Carroll...
*raises hand* I love it!

terra...
Meh. If I hear it once a decade that is just a tad too much.

I cringe at Mr Moolight but I don't think I really hate it.

TAR...
Cows find it very romantic. :]

Frank from Deeetroit...
I like Mr. Moonlight. The organ in the middle is pretty lame, but John's
vocals rock in this song. The Alnthology version is much better, with the
guitar solo in place of te organ solo.

Bernie Woodham...
I hated it when I was a kid. But love it now. Mr. Moonlight is pretty
distinctive and shows that the Beatles reached into pretty obscure sources
for their influences. It reminds me of sophomores.

Hello Goodbye is the first Wings song. And I wish McCartney would have
waited until Wings formed to record it.

Sean Carroll...
'Mr Moonlight' never bugged me that much. I've seen so many people call
it the 'worst Beatles song ever', but I'm really not sure why. I prefer
it to, say, 'Matchbox' (which might have been a good song in the
original version, but the Beatles version is just so boring IMO; every
single second of it sounds exactly the same as every single other second).

terra...
Moonlight is no fave but it's not as bad as others.

Rich...
Love Mr. Moolight.

Sean Carroll...
Isn't 'Moolight' what the cows who produce skim milk say?

I'm also not keen on I'll Follow The Sun but others seem to really like
it.

But which song causes most divisions between those that "love" it and
those that "hate" it?

Sean Carroll...
'Within You Without You' comes to mind. Maybe 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer'.
'The Ballad of John and Yoko'. I'm guessing there are probably arguments
about 'Wild Honey Pie' and 'Why Don't We Do It in the Road?', but I
haven't actually heard any of them.

Angielexis...
I usually skip over "Within You Without You". "Good Morning, Good

DayTripper1966...
Yes, that has the bad combination of being both bad, and long.

Sean Carroll...
I don't think it's 'bad' -- parts are actually quite beautiful -- but I
do think it's the weakest song on SPLHCB. Mainly because it *is* so
long. JMO.

'Love You To' is a lot better--IMO maybe the best sitar-rock song ever,
other than 'Paint It, Black'.

Dr. Strangemonde...
"Location! Location! Location!" -- Yup, everyone has heard Sgt.

Bernie Woodham...
I accept that song as part of Sgt. P. Kind of like the album to play just
as it is, thankyou.

Pepper, but (relatively) few have ever heard "The Inner Light". So the
former Indian tune would have to be considered far more polarizing.

Personally, I can enjoy "W/I You W/O You" -- but not in the context of
the LP.

- Dr Strangemonde

Morning" seems to bring mixed reactions as well.

fattuchus...
Good Morning Good Morning is one of my favorites . . . very bouncy, up
beat, great musical instruments, nice sound effects and then it just
slides into Sgt. Pepper's Reprise. A great way to wake up in the
morning.

Other than that, I can think of many that I've heard a lot of people say
sucked that I like, and that I've heard a lot of people say were great
that I thought were just okay. But not really any that there are
actually two opposing 'camps' over that both have a lot of proponents.

terra...
There probably is one or two songs that have pretty divided camps (Rev 9
love/hate...Old Brown Shoe love/hate...LAWR love/hate) etc.

My own suggestions? You Know My Name? It's Only Love? The Inner
Light? Blue Jay Way? All could be contenders but The Long And Winding
Road maybe causes most division that I've seen. Yet I'm indifferent to
it.

fattuchus...
I thnk McCartney's Too Many People and Lennon's How Do You Sleep were
pretty divisive among fans and between the writers.
