I posted this over at a.f.k. but just wanted to share with the folks here at
r.m.b.
EVERYBODY'S IN SHOWBIZ
What an absolutely fantastic recording it is... I've listened to it 3 times
poisoned rose...

I bought a used copy of this awhile back. I consider "Celluloid
Heroes" and "Sitting in My Hotel" to be Ray Davies' last
masterpieces before he turned mortal again, but I couldn't find any
other tracks I liked. Sloppy and silly.

... sorry... I didn't catch it.
I can't answer the question for you... as to Ray's intentions, I have no
knowledge. I like the lyric as he performed it... it makes sense.

Seems like we discussed this album (and '70s-era Kinks in general)
pretty recently.

today. I think this is Ray's "New Orleans" album... I am just madly in love
with it... and I have a 35 year perspective on it having NEVER heard it
before yesterday.

It is a truly extraordinary record.
I have loved this album for most of those 35 years. It was an unending
source of frustration for me that it was not released on CD for many years.
In the end, I made my own vinyl transfer CD. I see that it is now available
legitimately, but why did it take so long?
"Look a Little On The Sunny Side" predates Monty Python's "Always Look On
The Bright Side Of Life" and "Celluloid Heroes" has been widely covered by
other artists. In Australia, Reg Livermore made it his own.
When driving around England a few years back, I could not get "Motorway food
is the worst in the world" out of my head. It is soooo true.

Ahh yes, the infamous "Happy Eater" motorway chain
Gawd, how awful!
Great album, one of the Kinks best IMHO.
I am really glad that Ray is getting the recognition and accolades he
deserves after all this time.
I have to find his comment on Macca and post it. Way to go Ray!

...it's BRILLIANT...! The musicians are BRILLIANT...! The songs are
BRILLIANT...! Ray's voice is BREATHTAKING...! Where in heaven did that
little vibrato come from (Unreal Reality)... I never heard it before...
IMVHO... this recording is not only classic KINKS... but I think it is a
classic recording in general... good mix of material... it sounds good...
the band is tight...
...and in my opinion (sacrilege!), I think Ray out did McCartney in the
"music hall" style song that McCartney does so well with his wonderful LOOK
A LITTLE ON THE SUNNY SIDE... and SITTING IN MY HOTEL... magnificent... I
hear Lennon in this song and Penny Lane too!
Well, I may be late, but this is wonderful... ;^)

It's so BRILLIANT, so BRILLIANT, so BRILLIANT, so BREATHTAKING, so
absolutely fantastic, you're so madly in love with it that you can't
even get the title of it correct.
The title of the album is "Other People's Lives", NOT "New Orleans".
