In Ian MacDonalds Revolution in the Head it's mentioned as a sped-up
bass-solo.

"Revolution in the Head" has a great forward section about music in the
60s, but don't rely on it for tech info.
The break in "Michelle" is a guitar. The tone knob is set to bass...

* Norman Smith has been a lot less forthcomming with his production
tricks than Geoff Emerick, whose book (while a gem IMHO) at times seems
to grandstand a bit. Does anyone else think the drums may have had a
little close-miking (if not the whole fairchild limiter treatment) on
acouple of tracks, namely "Girl" and "In My Life".

I dont think they closed miked any drums until Revolver sessions.
