gng...
Sorry for the new post on an old topic, but the last thread seemed to be
mutating and I could tell that some of you still have not accessed 5.1 LOVE.
First, if you think you are listening to 5.1 but not sure, put the disc on
and see if the FBI warning comes on, and then the Apple logo, and then the
menu screen with the ability to access the PCM, DTS, or DD audio versions.
If you do not see this, you are not getting 5.1.

Forget all the talk about DVD-A players and how your player is a regular DVD
player, etc. If you have an optical or coax digital cable out (and

Kevin Bracey...
No. The DVD-Audio layer is surround. The whole point of DVD-Audio is to
achieve better quality than possible on CD or DVD-Video, both in stereo and
surround.

Kevin Bracey...
Only do this if you haven't made the necessary connections to the player to
get the DVD-Audio version in surround. The DD and DTS tracks on the disc are
really only "backward compatibility" arrangements, taking up about 10% of the
disc. The bulk of the disc is the proper DVD-Audio version.

Full-quality DVD-Audio connections can be made using 6 analogue leads, HDMI,
i.Link, or various proprietary connections like Denon Link.

streaming bitstream), you are set. Basically, if you can hear a movie in
5.1 (real 5.1 like DTS or DD, not fake Dolby Pro Logic stuff), you can hear
LOVE in 5.1. The problem is that you need to set your player to play VIDEO
ON DVD-AUDIO DISCS. To access this, you stop the disc from playing and go
into your DVD player menus. My Panasonic DVD player hides this setting
under "disc". You must turn on video. When you do this, the magic happens!
Anyone who says that they listened to 5.1 and it was "OK" did not really
listen to 5.1 but probably a fake surround setting. I know, because I did
this and I kept saying "not bad, but slightly underwhelmed" and then got the
5.1 to work and had a giant smile on my face with the fantastic surround
mix. It's the same feeling you got when you first moved from mono to
stereo, or from analog TV to HDTV. Now all you audiophiles, please don't
flame me. I just want everyone who can to hear this 5.1 mix. The stereo
mix is good, the 5.1 is phenomenol. Mind blowing. I want to hear it again
and again.

So let's recap with some Q/A.

1. Do I need a special DVD player, like a super audio DVD or a DVD-A only
player?
NO - as long as you can play a regular movie in DD or DTS, your player will
work.

2. I think it's playing in 5.1, but can't tell.
If you did not see the FBI warning and the Apple logo at the beginning, if
you did not have the menu option to select DD or DTS, you are not in true
5.1.

3. I got it to work once, but now it doesn't.
My DVD player defaults DVD-Audio discs to NON-VIDEO. I must reset everytime
I turn the player back on. And yes, LOVE is the only 5.1 disc that makes me
do this and No, I don't understand why. But it works, so just do it!

4. The stereo sounds great. Why go through the hassle of all of this?
Because the 5.1 mix is outstanding and will convince you that the future of
the Beatles catalog is 5.1. It's like hearing the songs for the first time.
And songs that seem to lie flat in stereo, such as I Want To Hold Your Hand,
make sense in 5.1 when the audience screaming in in the rear channels and it
feels like you are in the middle of a Beatle concert. Cellos from Walrus in
rear right, then rear left. Snippets of songs, like Nowhere Man, seem to
float by around you. Stunning.

I hope this helps -

Jeff...
I listened to it on my regular CD player..and it sounds fantastic to me
on that. No need to
buy any other equipment..IMO.
